Took my newly bought 2000 on a 600 mile road trip over the week end. Car has a slight vibration that comes on around 58 mph. Feels like it is in the rear. No steering wheel shake. I have read that the wheels are hard to keep balanced. Kinda did it when I first got it but smoothed out at higher speed. Now is continues but doesn't get worse in higher speed. Guess I will start with wheel balance. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Rich
If all that is mentioned above checks out fine, I would suspect the Torque Tube Bushings. The A4 Torque Tubes have the smaller 10mm bushing and they are found deteriorated/rotted more than not.
The bad part is you have to remove the drive train (engine bell housing- reward) to get it out and inspect it.
I also have a 2000 model, base 6 speed, I had the same vibration you describe and thought it was a rear wheel out of balance, Long story short it was a warped left front wheel. Bought a replacement and all is good.
I had a vibration that I noticed @ 70mph on the way home from my purchase. Further investigation revealed the vibration would also be replicated in park and neutral @ approx. 1500-2000 rpm. I suspected the possibility of the driveline having bad couplings, but after removing the serpentine belt, it went away. Tried replacing the alternator, no joy. So I removed the water pump, put it in a vise on the bench, bearings felt smooth, then blew air onto the impeller to gain some speed and watched it vibrate the bench. Replaced the water pump (probably an aftermarket) and life is good.
Btw, mine is a '99 A4 with 82000 mi.
Looks like this is gonna be a SOB to diagnose. Haven't started looking yet. People riding with me can't hear it or feel it but me as the driver you get the feel of the car in the seat. Something is not right and it starts around 58 mph and you got to be on smooth surface. Thanks for the replys and will keep you all informed
