Remember the old saying "hang onto something long enough its bound to come back into fashion". Theres a lot of items/fads out there that were popular that I'm praying don't come back, disco being my most hated (I had a "death before disco" shirt to show my displeasure). Everyone wanted to be John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, ugh! Anyway, white lettered tires seemed to be nearly mandatory in SoCal in the late 60's and 70's. Not my cup of tea but can look pretty cool as part of a "racer" or "track" type theme. Really depends on how the rest of the car is done up. Aw crap, Staying Alive by the BeeGees just came on! Gotta go kill it!!! Best wishes to all!
I know a guy who has them on his Challenger. I've seen them for a couple of years, and yes they are deteriorating, they didn't look great close up from the beginning, and they don't fit well within the built in outlines.
Another popular way to go is a reverse one-time use vinyl mask which you then spray your color on. A lot of owners go that route because cut plain white vinyl is pretty cheap nowadays; it'd cost a fraction of the tire letter stickers to do.
Becoming more prominent also, particularly in the import crowd or really any car with a real thin side profile tire, is "shaving" the tire and then applying the letters. Shaving is as you imagine it; you shave all the raised portions of the sidewall with a razor to make a smooth surface; for that "moar race car!!" look.
Before I bought my Vette, I spent a year shopping for one online.
I remember seeing a yellow C5 with whitewall tires.
To say the least, it was unusual.
Any one ever see a C5 or later with white wall tires?
