Back when I had a C4, it was stored in the garage with a cover over it for the winter.. The garage was used for two daily drivers, too. The Vette was parked closest to the service door, (which for various reasons, was the way it had to, and still has to be) .When I took the cover off in the spring, there was a 2"X2" chip out of the paint on the front bumper. It would seem someone (who of course remains unknown to this day) bumped it with something causing the chip. So I constructed a box out of 2X4s and plywood which covered the front, top , and both sides. I left the back open, obviously. It measured 4ft high, 8 ft long, and 8 ft wide. I lined the inside with styrofoam where any part of the body could possibly contact the car and ran a board across the bottom as a stop so I'd know when to stop so the front of the car wouldn't contact the front of the box. After getting the C5, it was a tighter squeeze as it was wider, which resulted in having to cut off two feet from the length, which allowed the doors to open much wider and resulted in much easier entry and exit to the car. There was enough room to get the cover on and off but is kind of a tight squeeze towards the front. As an added benefit, the top of the box turned into an extra storage area for all the stuff (junk)that usually accumulates in a garage over time. Total cost was well under $100 and it has been working well for several years now. If anyone cares, I will try to furnish pics.
Not sure I understand the environment.
-"...in the garage with 2 daily drivers also", so you have a 3 car garage I assume (either attached or detached).
-The service door; assume you mean a man door? A standard door from outside or from the house?
-Someone, unknown to this day... in other words either you, your wife, a kid of yours...?
Sorry, not making sense to me. Unless "the garage" is a remote garage somewhere? Not really "the" garage, but "a" garage?

Sorry for the confusion. It is an unattached 3 car garage shared with landlord and my wife and I. "Service door" is man door that is in the middle of the west wall. 16' and 9' doors are on north side. The Vette is parked where the 9'door is, nearest the man door. To get into and out of the garage a person has to walk by the front of the Vette to get to man (or person to be non gender specific) door, which created the problem. The box protects the front and sides of the car from walk by traffic and things like the snowblower etc. We designed the garage ourselves and in retrospect we should have done a few things differently but needless to say it's too late now. Anyway, the box works for me.
Even though cost was relatively low, it just seems silly and impractical to me. You essentially built a wooden box in a much larger box (the garage) to protect your car. All for a 2"x2" area. If you can't trust your family to be more careful (and maybe you can't since nobody was honest enough to take responsibility for the damage), then that is just sad.
At only 4' high you must be really short, or have to hunch over just to get to the car door. And 8' wide is barely enough room to get those doors open. I'm guessing you rarely drive the car and have the ability to pull straight in/out when you do drive it.

Well, to repair the chip was estimated to be $250, so rather than have it happen again I built the box. And I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the wife and landlord that maybe they didn't realize what happened. The box protects an area 8' wide and 6' long, where the vast majority of the foot traffic is. I may not be able to play pro basketball, but I'm no oompa loompa, either, so, no, I do have to bend over to get in because most of the door is clear of the box. And yes, I rarely drive the car and can go straight in and out. At any rate, the way I look at it, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Just be glad you aren't in a position where you have this situation, I guess

Yeah, please post photos, this is interesting! I have a wall of double cardboard boxes protecting my Vette in the garage, in between my wife's car and the Vette!

Oh I have this situation too. Have a 2 car garage, not 2-1/2 mind you and it is shared with a Chevy Traverse SUV that my wife drives all winter. We park with our driver's doors to the middle as there is no room to open passenger doors once inside (she pulls in, I back in). Plus have 9 and 11 year old boys in and out constantly down the middle, playing basketball with the main door open, and all our bicycles stored behind the Vette. Also have lawnmower behind the Vette and often pull it out while both cars are in garage. Service door is on my side and while rarely used, it can make contact with my front end upon opening.
All that being said, everyone in my household appreciates all the items we own and does what they can to care for them. "Prevention" in my case is teaching others to be careful and courteous, and have respect for ours and others property.

Somebody be lyin' to ya. No way somebody got a 2" mark on your car without knowing they hit it IMO.
Regardless, if a box around your car is what makes you sleep at night, no harm. I am thankful I don't have to share a garage with a stranger (but do wish I had more covered parking than the single garage we do have).

I can understand how it could have been inadvertant and how no one could have known so I've let that rest. As far as the landlord being a stranger, we have lived in a side by side duplex with him for 13 + years and he is also a very good friend of mine. We built the garage together and my wife and I have a financial interest in it. I consider myself very fortunate because I am well aware of landlord -tenant problems being a retired police officer.

I certainly agree with you but as we all know, accidents can happen. Just trying to do what I can to lower the odds. And as we all know, you just can't build a garage big enough. It fills up REAL fast!

I got the pics on the phone (LG) but can't begin to figure out how to get them onto the computer to send off. One of the grandkids should be here soon so maybe she can figure it out. If not I'll go to plan B, when I can formulate it.
I managed to get the pics from the phone to the computer but can't get them to transfer to forum. Awaiting arrival of other granddaughter's computer genius boyfriend

Reason: No need to keep quoting the same post/pic.
As mentioned above, after you click on the yellow square box (pic of mountain), click on "browse your device", find your picture file and double click on it and then "insert". The link should show up in your answer box. Finally click on "reply".
I don't know what I did or how I did it but it seems to have worked. (Bill Gates look out!) I am going to replace the white styrofoam with sturdier pink in the near future. Power cord on right side of box goes to the battery tender. Square holes in bottom allow access to front tires for checking air and putting on tire covers as well as access to jacking pad area

Reason: No need to quote your own pics again. Congrats on getting them posted to the forum.
