Here are the four sensors that were taken out of my wheels this morning. I know people may have been Skeptical when i stated how old my sensors where and still working. Sorry about some of the pic. Three were 97 one was 02 that was a replacement for a broken one. I bought my car new, So i knew they were original.

I am curious about how many miles were on your car when you switched out the TPMS? I also have a 1997. In 2014 when I got new tires and changed the wheels the original TPMS were still working and the mileage on my car was 37,200.

We can only imagine how many of these sensors were thrown away while they still had plenty of life, because of false statements about there life span. No one really knows how long it really is. Those sensors in the pic above were still functioning 20 years later.

I put new sensors in about 5 years back when I bought new wheels and tires. It was the cheapest option. There was no way I was going to pay to (a) dismount the old tires to pull 15 year old sensors out and (b) have them installed on my new rims and tires, when I could get a package - wheels, tires, sensors, installed and balanced, ready to go from Tirerack. Mileage at the time was about 70k, car was built July '97. The OEM sensors were still working but took a mile or so to register - the "new" ones are online before I hit the end of my driveway, about 200 yards.

There sure a few miles on those. Longevity out of those early cars by what is being reported.

When I bought my C5 last summer, the original owner had just changed out all four original TPMS when he installed new Kumho run-flats. Considering they were 17 years-old, it looks like I don't have to worry about new ones for quite a while!

When I replaced the sensors. I went with the 01 to 04 system. Also replacing the key fobs and receiver. It was a good time to update the system. I have done a lot of that with my car. When it’s time replace I replace with newer upgrades.

You should really replace your tires. Even if the tread is still good, they're 16 years old.

My '04 has over 90K on the original sensors. I have an intermittent issue with one of the rear wheel sensors, but the others still work fine.

You are right about that. I actually switched back to them recently so I could get new tires mounted on a set of C6 rims.
