First, that's so far beyond what the op said. Second, I made 640rwhp with no meth, just a D1, cam and headers, no built motor necessary. With that resume I would expect mid 7xx or better.

For the OP, if you did a cam and headers I think you can hit 400rwhp and still have it be driveable, no heads needed. In hindsight I would have just done a D1 or Novi and headers. It would be similar cost and make way more power.

Last summer I did exactly what you're asking about. I already had a CAI and cat back. I added a set of ported 243 heads had the TB ported, mild cam, headers and supporting parts while you're in there (lifters, pushrods, timing chain, trunnion upgrade for the rockers) and a set of red fuel rail covers just cuz. I got to a little over 400 to the wheels and spent just over $5,000 including the labor and tune.

Now, with the added horsepower, I need a new clutch. And, while it's apart, makes sense to do the gear at the same time, right? Then I'll be done...

Cam is around $400. Pushrods around $100. Valvesprings under $300. Miscellaneous gaskets, etc, $100. Tune, $150-$700 depending upon where you go. Labor for parts install, I'd guess around $1000, but this is something I'd do myself, as is the tune.

A long time ago I asked Mike Norris to help me make 400 hp.
We would do it with only bolt on's no head or cam change.
Headers ,a flow through exhaust, different intake ( LS6 or
aftermarket, and a couple of other bolt-ons.
Since you said you wanted 400 hp., and not rwhp, it does not
take much to increase your present hp-350 to 400hp. You are
only talking about 50 hp.
Good luck and keep your expenses down.

the OP is obviously on a budget.. start with the affordable easy to do yourself mods.. get a intake.. ( CAI ) callaway honker and vararam are the two most popular.. that's about $3-400. a cheaper cat back is around $5-600.. send your ECM off to ECS or Frost and get a $150 tune. that will make a noticeable difference in power and performance, should be good for at least 30 HP.. if that is not meeting your needs, then do the headers, that will get you another 15-25 or so....and then take the next step and get a full dyno tune...will wake it up.

Great idea! With that much lead added to the front end, you'll be able to break loose the tires in 6th gear.

This sounds more like what I'd want to do...nothing internal or tremendously expensive, and yet enough of a gain to feel the difference, but not enough to have to beef up the driveline...50-60 hp, and about the same increase in torque?

LS7 swap. On more of a budget, LS3 swap from a wrecked car.

As much of a hoot as this would be, it wouldn't really be a C5 anymore either without the LS1...

My 2001 A4 coupe (with 315 gears) had CAI and cat back from the OO, I added LT's and the full dyno-tune. got 331HP and 340TQ at the wheels. That's a little over 400HP crank. They also tightened up the shift points, it was a HUGE difference before and after.

The CAI ~$300 (mine is a Blackwing)
The cat-back ~ $700 (mine is B&B Route 66)
The LT's ~ 1100 (mine are second hand Kooks)
The dyno-tune ~ $500 (Xtreme Motorsports of Tempe)

I beg to differ. The LSx are all the same family of engines.
