Default Sound Dampening

I wanted to make a post of my recent install on my 2002 Z06 EB 32,000 Miles stock. I installed Dynamat Extreme on every inch of the interior and then covered it 100% with 1/4" and 1/2" Dynaliner depending on the location. My main concern was just overall interior noise along with a little heat as everyone knows from the center console area. I also added the compartment divider. This is my first post so I am new to this so bare with me.

I ordered the products from Walmart online and used 3 bulk packs of Dynamat Extreme exactly. The install was very easy and I was very happy with the quality and ease of use/install with Dynamat. The interior is extremely easy to remove and if you haven’t done it there are forums with the steps to do so. When installing the Dynamat Extreme there was not a spare piece left over. I used 3 pieces to cover each door and everything else went to the rest of the interior.

I used the 4 boxes of the ¼” Dynaliner to cover the front half of the car waterfall or behind the seats forward and then used 3 boxes of the ½” in the rear or trunk area. I was nervous about the fit and finish of the carpet going back in with the ½” but everything went in snug for sure but it fit very well with no deformities to the carpet. The main issue I had was the compartment divider that I ordered was all foam and it was a little scrunched which I had no issue with as it would make a better seal. Although it did leave a little imperfections in the carpet as you can tell from the picture. I am ok with it as I know it is a snug and secure fit.

I noticed a big difference from the Dynamat and Dynaliner. The inside road and exhaust noise was greatly reduced and the heat radiating in was slim to none. The compartment divider did an ok job and did help but It seemed like a cheap piece of high expansion foam that didn’t do as much as I was hoping in terms of sound reduction. The car audio was greatly improved and it was much easier to have a conversation in the car.

I may in the future make my own compartment divider with that one as a template with better materials and see if that helps.

Overall it took about 2 weeks but that was on and off and the car is not a daily driver so I was in no rush. I was more concerned with getting the job done right. It did add some obvious weight with the Dynamat Extrme. I would say maybe 60lbs. However the Dynaliner was a dense compact foam and did not weigh hardly anything which made me go ahead and add it everywhere as well.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've done my doors with Dynamat Extreme and Ensolite foam, which made a big difference. One of these days I'll get the floors and cargo area done.

Nice job, OP.

I did similar install years ago, with a complete kit sold by Marc at Vettenuts, a forum sponsor.

Wonderful improvements, as you describe.

A year or so later, I removed both rear Wheels, and took the wheel-well liners off.
Insulated the back side of the liners, and the inner wall, where I could reach.

You have to be carefull in a couple places, not to go too thick, or the liners won't go back in. I had to remove a little bit of material, then they went in nicely.

The wheel-well insulating, compliments nicely what you've done already, is a noticeable improvement again, and just kind of ties it all together as far as Wheel road noise filtering into the cab.

Good luck,
Don

I did mine with the poor mans boom matt, frost king duct insulation from home depot. I cant remember if it was just over 2 rolls or 3 just to do the cockpit area.

Great job, OP.

Things I have done to calm down the interior noise in my '03 EB coupe:

1) NON run-flat tires.
2) Vettenuts Premium C5 insulation kit (Ensolite over foil/closed cell foam).
3) Three piece "Blockit" dead mat for rear hatch compartment. I purchased this first before tackling the entire interior so might as well use it over the top of the carpet.

The rear wheel wells are labor intensive to do. Therefore, I'm considering a spray-on sound insulator such a Lizard Skin or Second Skin. Need to do more investigation before I tackle this part of the job.

I don't track my car; just use it for week-end cruising. Not concerned about adding weight. Not trying to made a Corvette a Coupe de Ville, just want to quiet down the drumming sounds so that I can talk to the Mrs. and enjoy the music (and the exhaust!).

Nicely done!!! I have my Z06 done also. Makes a big difference. Especially if you have a good audio system.

Nice looking install! I did mine with Soundskinz and covered everything just as you did. The difference is amazing. It has the interior cabin characteristics of a regular modern car, but remains a crazed beast to drive. I couldn't be happier and is my favorite mod to date. The most impressive part is the doors. I have so much mid bass punch out of my Rockfords in the doors, it is night and day difference and the doors close with a solid thunk that you have to hear and feel to believe.

OP,thanks for the great post and detailed photos! I for one like it when people include lots of photos of their install. I am going to do this to my C5 after reading your post and seeing the process up close and personal, thanks to you taking the time to post all the pics.

What did you use on the wheel wells. I looked at those wheel liners and thought about pulling them off to see if I could put anything up there but I ran out of Dynamat.

Thanks

No problem I got some photos of everything except for the doors. I did the doors first and they were a little tricky. Also when installing my dynaliner on top of the dynamat I removed the stock sound deadening/heat pads that were in place. Most of those were deteriorating foam and small carpet pads. The carpet would have not gone in right without removing them. Although I am sure the carpet would fit fine if you only use a dymanat material.

Did my whole C5 with Dynamat, RAAMat and Ensolite years ago - made a huge difference - was a LOT of work! I was sore for 3 days afterward!

I used the stuff from Lowes (sorry, can't remember it's name). After a really good cleaning and letting it dry in the sun, I started fitting pieces on the wheel-well liner. I cut to size as best I could, then used spray adhesive to set it in place. Finally, used an aluminum tape over the seams, as was practical.
In some areas I went two layers thick, thinking 'it's out of sight, why not?'

But again, a couple of areas, as I recall very near where the screw holes are, I had to remove a little for fitment. Trial & error, and refit...

I also put some, on the inner wall of the wheel-well itself, where it looked like there was room, still allowing the liner to fit back in place.

I'm so glad I did this, and as I said before, it just compliments the work done to the interior for sound proofing and deflecting heat back to atmosphere.

(I also have the insulated tunnel plate, which likely helps some reducing heat to the tunnel.)

As was mentioned by others, listening to my music is better, and carrying on a conversation is much easier if you have someone with you. Still a Sports Car, though. I also consider this project (interior & wheel-well insulation) as one of my favorite mods, to my C5. And it's a mod which will never wear out, so good value to your dollars, I think.

I need to get this done myself, trying to carry on a phone conversation with bigger cam, headers and cat backs is nearly impossible. I bought the vettenuts kit last year, going to try to get it install yet this spring
