Well, I've had stock, two different B&M, C6 Z06, and MGW shifters in my C5s. Regardless what most say, the stock shifter is not that bad.
My 98 came with a B&M Ripper shifter, HATED it. Replaced it with a C6 Z06 complete setup, loved it over the B&M Ripper.
BUT, my 98 came with a B&M shifter and I love it. B&M must have updated their shifter because the original Ripper sucked.
I currently have a MGW shifter in my 02. I just installed it this winter and truefully I haven't put many miles on it. But I've enjoyed those miles, the MGW is a good shifter.
