Shifter

The MGW shifter is a very good upgrade for the C5. Other owners have used the C6 Z06 shifter.

Changing your tranny fluid helps too. Mobil Super ATF D/M works very well in my 04 M6. In my opinion, if you're going for a different shifter, take the time to change the gearbox oil too, if it hasn't been done recently (or ever).
C5/6 boot are different, and there was a design change in mid 2008, so if you do piece at a time, make sure all pieces are from the same time frame.
Everything else does not fit the bill for me. I had MGW on my last car and wasn't impressed. That's right! Too much effort, force to get into the gates, hard to find reverse. Never again.
Hurst and B&M also have a reputation for requiring a lot of shifting force. Hinson, find a video, I felt the shift throw length to be laughable. There is more throw in a light switch.
I also considered the following:
RSD Snap Shifter - Bascially a cut down factory shifter, that has been reworked.
MTI Six Shooter - Wanted to buy this but MTI doesn't return phone calls/lack of service.

I installed it and it made my car a completely different experience.
There are basically TWO types of shifters for our cars:
A shifter like the STOCK OEM shifter. C5 & C6 are the same without Assist springs to spring the shift rod back to the 3rd/4th neutral gate.
Aftermarket shifter without Assist springs to spring the shift rod back to the 3rd/4th neutral gate.
Aftermarket Shifter WITH assist springs to spring the shift rod back to the 3rd/4th neutral gate. The MGW and KIRBAN BOTH have the assist springs. The KIRBAN also has SHIFT STOPS.
Yea, Yea, Yea,, Everybody says that the T56 has its own shift stops inside the transmission but I properly set and use the ones on the KIRBAN. When you are shifting and the adrenaline is flowing, you KNOW FOR SURE that you are in gear!

Several people have driven my car and ALL of them really like the shifter.
