Was driving on I10 this afternoon smooth and straight. All of a sudden brakes start doing crazy stuff nearly making me swerve into off the road. Active Handling lights up in DIC. Then Low Trac warning lights and Service Active Handling lights in DIC. Code show C1286H - A malfunction of steering wheel speed sensor. I disconnected the sensor until I can get it replaced. This is a "Safety Feature" I could easily do without!
That happened to me on my '04. Pretty scary when it happens. That is the SWPS taking a crap. If your car is a '01 or newer the part number is 88965543. They cost about $70 and take 2.5 to 3 hours to replace. The older ones are no longer available new and can only be found used. Since I have replaced mine a few years ago I have not had any problems since.
Wait until all the electronic safety crap they pile on these new cars for an extra $20,000 goes South. I can see it ejecting me out on to the pavement, backing up, then running over me!
Mine was doing that as well due to a bad lateral accelerometer. I did the same as you. After about the 4th time, I pulled over and disconnected the steering position sensor. That was 3 years ago and I never reconnected it... Car has been in heavy downpours, freezing weather, and is riding on R Compounds with 640rwhp. Stability control system caused more problems than it prevented.
Here it is flaking out on the dragstrip at over 120mph when everything was suppose to be off.
Hm. When mine acted up it literally just pulsed the abs pump and pulled ever so slightly to one side. Drove like that for several weeks with it happening, certainly wouldn't call it a safety issue for my case.

1.) How do you disconnect the SPS?
2.) When you disconnect the SPS, you are still able to drive the car? And it doesn't cause any other issues?

Sensor is plastic ring around the steering column located on the floorboard where the column goes into the firewall. Connector is on left side of sensor. Just unplug it
Yes you can still drive the car. DIC will show Service Active Handling And amber Low Trac Warning will be illuminated. Active handling button on console then only turns Traction Control on or off.
ABS will still work.

My dream is the return of a C2 like Vette with ability to select AC, Power Windows, Power Doors, Power Seats, etc.
I've gotta go with your thinking. If I've got AC, power windows and tunes I'm a pretty happy guy. I don't want any damn car making decisions for me, such as locking my doors after starting the car etc. Irritating! I'll take simple just about every time! Best wishes!
i agree , when buying a car now you may want one option and it only comes in a package with 5 or 6 others you don't want . GREATLY ANNOYING . . . . and expensive . . peace
