Slowed down for a stop light ahead, and My '99 just died. No warning on the DIC, nothing. I put it in Park and turned the key off and back on, and it started right up. Drove it a mile or so into a mall parking lot. Shut it off, looked under the hood. Didn't see anything amiss. Started it up and it died again. Started it up and everything seemed normal, no DIC messages. Drove it home,(50 mi.), and it ran O.K. Went to drive it next day, and it started up then died and woudn't go. Pulled codes and it had P1518 and C1226 .. Indicates bad gas pedal and bad wheel sensor? Why all of a sudden? Doh! During all this I didn't hear the fuel pumps at all times, but I guess they shut off after charging? I'm checking for rodent damage to wiring, but so far no luck. Anyone have any ideas? Hate to start throwing parts at it. PM anyone?
This code will cause the stalling issues you experienced and more.
Suggest you remove the battery and the shelf it sits on and examine the wiring to the PCM and TAC both of which are under the battery. Side post batteries were well known to leak acid onto the electronics below. Likely acid damage WILL be found
C1226 - Right front excessive wheel speed variation
Jack the right front of the car, put it on jack stands and remove the wheel. Examine the wiring on both sides of the connector for the Wheel Speed Sensor for damage and repair as needed. Separate the two halves of the WSS connector and examine the contact surfaces for corrosion and mal formed pins:
The connector on the right is likely what you will see. reshape the contact surfaces to be like the one on the left and reconnect.
This condition will NOT cause your stalling but will disable TC and AH (If the car is equipped with the AH RPO (JL4)).
Thanks. I would not be surprised if there was not some rodent damage somewhere in there. Car was parked in an open-ended port all winter. Thanks again.:cheer
