I replaced the wheel with a Momo:

Here are the pieces I used:
MOMO EAGLE Steering Wheel Leather 350mm 13.8" EAG35BK0S

NRG Steering Wheel Short Hub Adapter for CORVETTE CAMARO FIREBIRD Z28 TRANSAM

NRG BALL LOCK QUICK RELEASE HUB STEERING WHEEL HUB NRG SRK-200CF CARBON FIBER

CHEVROLET Compatible Airbag Simulator Resistor Disconnect Kit - DIAGNOSTIC TOOL (to eliminate the Air Bag warning light from staying on)

NRG CARBON FIBER STEERING WHEEL HORN BUTTON RING REPLACEMENT 6 BOLT PATTERN MOMO

MOMO Horn Button Large Blank No Logo (got this along woth the carbon fiber repkace ring to not have the MOMO logo on the horn button unfortunately I think they are no longer made)

Just be aware that you may be removing the air bag depending on what wheel you decide on. You do so at your own risk. I do not let anyone else other than me drive my car because of that. Just FYI.

The OEM wheel may be very difficult to remove after all this time. We had to drill holes in the wheel to hook the puller to in order to get it off. Others though have had no issues.

Momo Monte Carlo with Momo 2401 hub...Easy installation...Also removing the old steering wheel is a breeze...Even without a puller...Just loosen the nut..Don't fully remove unless you want to lose your teeth!...Rock the stock wheel back and forth 9"o clock-3 o"clock firmly and she"ll usually slip right off..

Fuel Pressure Gauge

Wide Band Gauge

Where the cup holder used to be is a Nitrous arming and control center, round with mini-toggles to Arm, Heat, Open the bottle, and Purge.

I chose to go with a C6 steering wheel modified and enhanced by APSIS USA. It turned out great and I was able to retain an airbag. You can see the route I took and documented HERE. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do! One word of advice: While many of us have had luck removing the stubborn stock steering wheel, I was not one of them. You may need to improvise with how you "uninstall" it. Mine came off in eight pieces.

Thank you! Now if I only could find time to install that coin on the car instead of having 'em as living room decorations.

fk man that changes the entire car for me

One of the things I hated most on my C5's were the steering wheel and seats

Did you need to play with the airbag connectors or was it plug and play ?

No connector change needed. Just an airbag swap. I linked my thread detailing everything above.

I ended up going with an MCS wheel. Same C5 style just a much better quality.

FWIW... I like to try to do as much as I can myself. But, when I bought a new steering wheel and had to return my core, I just went to my local GM dealer to have the wheel swapped. Total with tax was ~$70. Some people spend more than that on specialty tools to do the job themselves.

Do you folks without airbags pay a higher insurance premium? Is there any liability having someone else drive the car?

What's your opinion on the usefulness of the air bag? I feel like without it at least I'd have a chance at avoiding further danger after it went off. With the airbag you completely lose control after it goes off and could end up putting yourself in more danger by flying off a cliff. However in a head on collision you might be toast without it. I'm torn on the issue.

I love this thread, because I hate my stock steering wheel. You all are tempting me to spend some more money to change it out. Like all of them you are posting. Thanks for sharing.

I went with a custom wheel made by Nexon Motors, carbon fiber wheel with custom blue carbon weave and blue stitching. It looks black but with the right light you can really see blue pop, as in the photo below taken with the camera flash on. I love it, it's one of my favorite upgrades to my car.

Honestly, it comes to what your willing to spend for one. Doing a swap over to the C6 steering wheel or some of the aftermarket ones, and it's going to be a lot cheaper than getting a custom made one with premium materials like carbon fiber/alcantara. Although, in the Corvette lineage the C5 steering wheel is not the best looking one out there but, it's decent enough looking as a base to make enhancements to. Just be thankful you don't have a 94-96 Corvette, those steering wheels are downright hideous. You have plenty of choices out there for a swap if your budget conscious.

I opted to go with an offering from Apsis, that kept the original steering wheel intact but, with definitive enhancements. The air bag is intact, as I had the cover enhanced as well, and couldn't be happier with it. It's not cheap but, it certainly is far better looking than the plain original.

'...and I was able to retain an airbag.'
You hope it will work, but won't know until 'that time comes'!

I have a custom Caravaggio wheel which I had done @ 1500 kms.
The C6 definetly looks better/ smaller.

If I went to the trouble to do the C6 swap, I would have gotten the SW controls working,
which another member worked out.

Every time ' a SW swap' thread comes out everyone freaks out. No airbag!
How many guys with C5's also have 'classic muscle cars'... without air bags??? Obviously, with AB's you're safer, BUT you still drive your 'non airbag' car!
