Trying to change the exhaust (catback) on my 02 coupe. I have a portable
lift but it does not raise the car high enough to remove the old exhaust(I
even tried raising the car at the end of the garage and use the slant of the driveway for more room). I checked and there are no places where I live that rent bays and lifts.
Has anyone used an alternative, safe method to do this?
Thanks in advance for any and all replies

A couple blocks of wood.

When I did mine I had a humvee jack but I was still very nervous about the angle. I literally got everything unbolted and ready to pull out, then raised it up for 30 seconds to yank the exhaust off so I was never under it.

Also so if you haven't already, unbolt the sway bar.

Are you intending on preserving your factory cat back? If not rent an exhaust chain cutter, or use a sawzall and just cut them out. How high off the ground does your portable lift get you? Should need about 48" IIRC. The rest is wiggle and twist.

If you want to preserve them then you may need to take the car to an independent shop in the area. I know you said nobody in the area rents bays or lifts, but there must be a local muffler shop/auto repair shop that can do it for you? I checked google maps for your area, and it seems pretty populated and commercialized with 55 square miles in total.

Can't imagine they would charge more than a few bucks to unbolt and pull out. You can drive home without the mufflers and do the new install yourself since the pipes over the axles are typically two piece units on aftermarket systems. Unless you are going to a Ti unit from a Z06.

The other option I have seen on here is driving the car up on a loading dock and backing over the edge. I couldn't think of any place around me to do that and I'd be afraid of going too far back if alone.

Sounds like cutting it is your most expedient solution - especially if you don't care about saving the stock exhaust, which most don't. Some guys have backed up on a loading dock and let the ***-end hang off the edge and removed the exhaust that way.

Others have simply gone for it with a couple of jacks.

Whatever you do, be safe. I'm lucky in that I have a lift at home but you can always go to an exhaust shop and ask them to swap it for you. I've had that done and it's pretty cheap to let a shop do it as it doesn't take long on a lift.

Wasn't worth my time...took it to the Cheby dealer and for $68 they did it in 30 mins...it took a lot of twisting even up on the rack...glad I did not try this at home...especially with the new Ti unit from a Z06...eh...

Original Z06 Tis with 11K miles...off a garage queen

I have a Quick Jack and with a little improvising the lift height is around 23"
I'm going to look into having a shop do this. I am replacing the oem with a ti exhaust, so I need the room for the install. I'm hoping someone on the forum can use the oem, just handle shipping so I want to avoid cutting. I'm not a mechanic but thanks to the forum I have grown used to trying things on my own so not being able to complete this is disappointing.
Thanks for the reply

My advice is check with a muffler shop and see what they would charge to swap the exhaust for you. I did that many years ago and they charged me $50 to do the work. Can't imagine the cost would be totally unreasonable today. Plus it would be a safe way to get it done.

i have removed my transmission on my z06 as well as a friends c5 coupe vette both on jack stands and the trick is to have the lowest part of the rear bumper at least 31 inch's above ground once you do that the exhaust and trans will have enough room to come out

After trying several things none of which I felt safe with, I had the job done at a local muffler shop. They charged one hour labor and the mechanic wanted the old mufflers.

Thanks to all for your responses
