My Z is my DD, rain or shine, so I'm one of those who fears the small potential for hydrolock with the Vararam.
I use a K&N, but any open is my preference. Oil or non oiling is better for dry dusty climates (like where I live), can't recall which.

I have sold thousands of them and never had a single hydrolocked motor reported. I logged 50,000 miles in two years rain or shine and never had an issue. The entire front end would need to be submerged to allow the intake to suck solid water into the motor.
Take a look at a picture of a C5 and compare the height of the door sills to the opening in the bumper. If you hydrolock a Vararam you would be flooding the car anyway.
I never gave it a second thought driving it in the rain. I had far more issues with water dripping through the hole the fog lights burned in their housing and the passenger side frame rail ground triggering active handling issues than my VR gave me.
I would stick with the factory intake. Replace the factory paper filter with a K&N oiled filter, remove the factory lid, and secure the filter in place with some large zip ties. You will get 90% of the performance benefit and save a lot of money in the process.
Best is the Reverse Zip Tie mod. It'll cost you almost nothing and provide more usable power gain than the Varaspam or K&N (the k&n does NOTHING). I know, I've done all three and the zip tie mod returned a 3 mph increase down the front stretch and 5 mph gain down the backstretch at PIR. The others? Nothing. And if you do choose the varacram, the hydro lock concern is a myth, it ain't gonna happen, drive with confidence.

i did Z06 lid, zip tie and then Vararam. Vararam ftw.

Well the good news is when you sent the proof to Vararam that a zip tie outperformed their intake they bought it back right?
I would also be curious if you have any track footage. When I run even down a short straight to 122ish I can see a 3mph difference down the straight based on just how I hit the turn and the time of day. If you didn't do all three on the same day then that 3-5 mph especially down a long straight doesn't mean much.
