Default 1997 EBCMs

I have 92 six speed and been thinking about picking up a C5 six speed, been finding mostly 97s but have heard the EBCMs are a common failure and almost impossible to repair. I have heard to stay with a 2002 or newer but the ones I have found and liked are out of my price range. what are the ramifications of the EBCM going bad, what does it affect, can the car be driven safely if it goes out, throw a code on the dash that cant be removed without being repaired, etc...?

It's not a fatal condition. It can go bad, then again it might not. I know personally of three 98s with miles from 30000 to 80000 that have not had the ebcm problem. You will lose ABS.

Sounds promising then. I found a 97 black six speed which is exactly what I want with 36k miles, it doesn't have HUD but I'm OK with that. I just read something about them going out because of the pc board is junk. If its just the case of transferring the components to a new board then that's not a big deal. Thanks for the reply! Will probably check the 97 out this weekend then.

Thanks! Since the module is mounted under the car behind the differential do you think it is safe to say that water is the problem?

I have a code reader that does ABS also, that wouldn't read everything?

A friend of mine has been driving his '98 for the last five years with a bad EBCM and it has caused no problems driving. He doesn't care.
