Default New Non-Runflats

I've gone through several sets of runflat tires; Goodyear EMT, Michelin A/S ZP and Pilot Sport PS2.

I've heard members say for years that non-runflat handle better, have a better ride and make less noise.

Honestly, I bought the Hankook V12 Ventra evo2 tires because they were so much less money.

After driving with them, my feedback is that the non-runflats are not noticably different than the runflats. The noise level and ride characteristics are on par. I mean I could try to talk myself into believing everything was so much better since I just bought them, but that would be pointless. Maybe it's because the ZP tires are so good now.

I love the new tires, they have excellent reviews and I got all 4 tires for about the price of 2 runflat tires.

Thanks! I might do the same. Looks like they have a $100 rebate at Discount Tire.

To be fair, the Ventus V12 got rated the worst in terms of ride comfort and noise for max performance summer non-runflat tires, while the runflats you mentioned are rated among the best for ride comfort and noise for runflat tires. You get what you pay for.

Sometimes you get more than what you expect for the money. Reviews for the new Ventus evo 2 was quite high.http://www.caranddriver.com/features...e-test-feature

Fourth place out of five... with a particular mention of noise.

Against premier manufacturers like Michelin and Goodyear for less than half the price...easy choice for me.

The point is, many criticize runflat from gut feel, when in reality they're pretty darn good in comparison for most driving experiences.

I replaced the runflats on mine with Bridgestone Potenzas. There really was no comparison. After taking two trips over 3000 miles and a half dozen trips over a thousand miles, I would never buy runflats again.

I am also happy with my decision to buy nonrunflats but they have improved with the newer iterations;

"Robert Saul, senior product manager, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations: We’ve focused our efforts on improving ride comfort in our latest generation of run-flat tires. In our newest run-flat offering, DriveGuard, we’ve used 3rd Generation, or 3G Run-Flat, technology to deliver a quiet, comfortable ride and confident handling of a touring tire. Bridgestone’s proprietary technologies, including our Cooling Fin sidewall design and NanoProTech sidewall reinforcement rubber compounds, have enabled us to make significant improvements over prior-generation run-flat tires.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.: Self-supporting tire technology has evolved quite a bit over the past 10 years. Goodyear has a third-generation product that offers inflated ride comfort while still providing zero pressure capability. The concepts of yesterday and today are generally the same, but with a more refined balance between inflated and deflated performance.

Henry Kopacz, public relations manager, Hankook Tire America Corp.: Run-flat tires have evolved over the past number of years. New run-flat tire technology can be used to develop tires that do not sacrifice ride or comfort, a limiting factor for some consumers in the past.

Ron Margadonna, senior technical marketing manager, Michelin North America Inc.: With Michelin run-flat tires, we have strived to engineer our product with less mass for improved rolling resistance to meet tougher Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards without compromising any safety mobility performance. Also, we have generated a newer-type technology called ZP SR (Zero Pressure Short Range) to further enhance and meet OEM requirements."

Depends on your driving style. For me, the OEM Good Year Run Flats scared the hell out of me a few times because the side walls are so stiff. I was living in L.A. at the time and always enjoyed taking the High Rise freeway interchanges at speed. Always felt that I could do at least twice the posted speed limit until I got the Vette with run flats. They tend to hop and lose the ground contact when you hit a seam in the road. Very scary. Replaced them with non-run flat Michelin PS2 and was very happy with the results. No more losing contact with the road.

It all comes down to what each person perceives as a good tire. I currently am running Hankook Ventus V12 EVO (previous version of the EVO2s) on my C5 and have absolutely no complaints about them - they've been on the car for 4-5 years now.

I also went through several sets on Michelin RF. Then I switched to the BF Goodrich /G-Force Comp A/S tires. So far they have been great performers.

Again, comparing the worst of the good to one of the best of the best. The statement that runflats are comparable to non-runflats when you are comparing opposing ends of the spectrum is doing a disservice to forum members.

I just put a set of said Hankooks on earlier this year and I couldn't be happier. I don't think they are noisy tire and they hook up and handle really well. Sweet tire for the price.

When I replaced my RF in 2002, I changed to non RF and never looked back, then I happened to look at the old tires closely, guess what I saw? The were M & S rated...that is mud and snow......no wonder they were hard as a rock.

As some of the others, I replaced my run flats with Hankook's about a month ago. The tire bill was less than $800 for all four at Discount Tire. I have driven a little on them and so far they are great. I am a happy camper.

I took your suggestion and JUST ordered the Hankooks. There is a $100 rebate at Discount, right now.

I "think" I'll get out of there for $650.........tax and all. We'll see!!!
