If the bushing is broke and the cable is fine. Can you get it up in the air to see if it's the rear bushing?
Thanks for the quick response. Tow truck operator said the rear is intact and attached. I will not be able to confirm and/or take the console apart to check out that end until the weekend.

Too bad it wasn't the rear bushing. That is the easiest to fix. Good luck.
If it's just the bushing here is what you need. Dorman 14041. The next to smallest bushing in the pack is the one that fits. All the parts stores have them AZ, O'Reily, ... About $6
Once you get the console apart and confirm it's the front bushing be very carful not to bend cable too much. The plast sleeeve can be moved a littlle bun not very much. If you try to bend it too far it will break. If it does it's new cable time. That's a real PITA to replace.
Holding the bushing in place snap onto the nipple with long handle channel locks or needle nose locking pliers.
You might want to do the rear bushing now also. My front bushing broke and then within a year the rear one went, it WILL strand you in a parking lot. Here is my post with pics for the rear.

On the rear I found it easier to take the lever off of the transmission. Then pop the bushing on to the nipple.
I have seen where some say they have popped the bushing on with their fingers. They must have a heck of a grip!
I am so careful moving my shift lever. Especially when I park on a slope. I use the parking brake before I put it in park to avoid torque lock. I really don't want to experience a broken cable or bushing. I cringe when I hear about guys shifting their autos like a manual.
Shifter inop. Will bushing replacement kit be the answer without having to replace cable?

Yes indeed. Mine broke at the shifter end like yours, but I changed both as a preventive measure. I'm glad I decided to do that because the other end's bushing basically disintegrated when I tried to remove it.

All you need is the Dorman 14057 kit and it costs just a few bucks. Use the white bushings (the orange ones are for Ford):
And this video shows you how to do it.
Dorman 14057 is an exact replacement and includes 2 bushings to replace both ends of the cable at once.
Dorman 14041 is an assortment, and only 1 of them is the right size. To do both ends of the cable you will need to buy 2 kits.
Thanks to all for the good info. Changed the shifter end bushing with one from 14041 assortment. I hope it lasts for awhile. I'll replace trans end next time it's up; hopefully it lasts until then.
If yours has the dark bushings, it may go another 18 years- see my post above.
Nice, thank you for that info and the other link. I haven't had my shifter out yet so I have no idea what the color of the bushings are. Be good to have them on hand anyway I guess.

The replacement kit is inexpensive and you definitely want to control when you're making the replacement and do it at home or a shop versus the parking lot or after the car had to be towed.
