The struts to support the hatch in my 2002 Coupe have failed. The bottom of the struts are difficult to access because of the speaker enclousures. Is it possible to pry the enclosures open in the back to gain access without going to the trouble of removing the entire enclosure.

Thanks,

its possible but not easy...you need to pop the clips loose and then pull them off the ball, not sure you can do it with messing something up.......I have a set of struts for sale if you are interested $40 to your door..can ship tomorrow...just PM me if you want them
^Yeah. Use a bent screwdriver type thingy to pop the clip out a little and it comes right off if you tap it.
So I replaced my worn out struts with ones from MidAmerica. Was tricky but got them both on. The hatch went up and down with one but was stuck in the open position with both struts on. So the repair failed. I guess I am going to take the car to the dealer and get the job done. Don't know if I got faulty struts from MidAmerica or what but there is only on way to install them.

On the surface, sounds like one of the struts is bad? Might try removing one end of the known good strut, if the hatch still does not start to go down with the additional weight, probably a bad strut. If you could confirm it that way, you could temporarily swap out the bad one with one of your old ones temporarily until you can return it for replacement?
