I shopped and thought Corvettes for a couple of weeks and invariably any question I had, I found my search engine directing me to this forum. Three days ago, I bought my first Corvette. I thought I owed you all a big thank you for all the information I found here. Thank you!
I'm 58 years old, owned lots of nice cars but never owned a Corvette. My father, a retired surgeon owned several Corvettes all bought new-'60 (bought while he was a resident), a couple of C-2s in the '60s, a '70 Stingray, '84 and his last Corvette a 50th Anniversary ('03)- which he sold only a couple of years after buying it primarily due to his inability to get in and out of it (he was in his 70s). So to say Corvettes were in my blood would be accurate- in terms of ownership life got in the way (school, children & etc.).
I bought this car three days ago, it was a love at first sight & drive which led to my purchase. I did not go to the dealership to buy a convertible. But this 2001 Corvette spoke to me in ways I have never been spoken to before--- my name was on it before I knew it.
I have gone over it with a fine tooth comb and the previous owners took very good care of it for me. So far the only thing I have been able to find that is not perfect is a radio tuning **** that comes off. What a great car, 17 years old, +96,000 miles. The original owner, considerately preserved the window sticker and I found it with the owners manual. The sticker pretty much tells it all.
I had replied to a welcome message and it is under Moderator review (I also included a photo of the window sticker, which I thought pretty well detailed my car).
Hopefully my reply will be approved soon, pending that, along with my thanks, here is another photo of my car (as per request)
I was really surprised to find this carefully folded and with the owner's manual- the dealership made no mention of it in the listing. I apologize in advance should this end up being a duplicate photo if/when my prior post approved by the Moderator. The only option I would have wanted had I ordered this car is the CD changer- otherwise- what more could a fellow ask for?
PS, it appears one of the prior owners did not care for the body side molding and removed it. I noticed this was "all the rage" at one time.
My first weekend with my Corvette and of course it would snow! First order of business- make it fit me, I have had to readjust the seats every time I get in and had not yet had the time to read up on how to reprogram the car for me. I managed to get the #1 & #2 drivers' settings programed and synchronized to the remotes (my wife cannot drive a standard, so I am both #1 & #2!)
I am amazed at the excellent condition of this car (as in nearly showroom new). How is that possible? Clean Carfax and it has had 2-4 (kind of hard to tell from the Carfax) previous owners and they obviously took very good care of it (lugs and security lug tool in sealed plastic bag together with owner's manual in the glove box and cargo net still with the car in it's trunk). At nearly 17 years old and approaching 100,000 miles, I expected to find far more issues. Everything works on the car. Neither key fob worked when I got the car, I disassembled them and cleaned the contacts with a soft brush and both now work as they should. I wonder how long the previous owner(s) lived with the non-working remotes- shame, as they did not have to.
The only thing I have been able to find (so far) that is broken on the car is the radio tuning **** (ordered a replacement today for $9 and some change); the visors (both) have a dog eared appearance that I've noted is pretty much par for the course (and nothing I can't live with), and the seat attachment bolts have a rusted "patina."
The only significant (or potentially significant) issue is the "pull key wait 10 seconds message" I have gotten a couple of times when starting the car. I do as instructed and no problem from then on. I researched this a bit and it appears this is very likely related to, or induced by a weak or dying battery. When I bought the car I knew there was a better than 50/50 chance the car would need a new battery because the dealer needed to jump it. However, it has started just fine ever since. I've put the battery on my tender and it has a diagnostic function- so I should know before too long.
Anyone have experience with Interstate batteries in their Corvette? Costco carries that brand and it seems remarkably inexpensive ($75).
Should the snow clear off and the salted streets dry up tomorrow, I'd love to take a short Interstate road trip.
