I purchased a C5 M6 a few months ago and have this fear, that when going up through the gears, that I might hit reverse when I'm heading for 5th. Is there any 'lockout' that prevents this when traveling at speed? I haven't hit R yet. But I kinda think about it every time I go for 5th. Thanks.
Very little to be concerned about in my experience. Fourth to fifth always seems very smooth and natural. Spring loaded detention seem sufficient to keep you out of reverse.
Nothing to worry about, there is a lockout. You would have to fight really really hard to even try, and then you would probably bend/break something before actually getting it in.
And you will know if that lockout ever fails, assuming you have the stock shifter.
Search around for "grinding going into 5th"
its very easy easy to hit reverse without the lockout with the stock shifter, but you really won't damage anything unless you really try to force it in there.
Great info here. Many thanks to all! I have wondered if I am just 'good' (ha!!!) or if there was a tranny angel that prevents me from hitting reverse. I've never had an issue but the concern was always there. Thx again.
My lockout solenoid was faulty when I took ownership on my Z, I will tell you...you will know it when it is not working!!!!!! Buzzed reverse a few times.... I installed a new one, and reverse gate is completely blocked off....
Cheap part and easy fix.
If your lockout isn't working you will find out quickly. When trying to get in to reverse to back up it will take two hands and a lot of force to jam it in to gear. It happened to me and that's how I found out about it. If you look at the shop manual, it tells you to drop the trans to replace it. It's quite hidden on top of the trans where you can't see it. By poking around you will find it. Having done a clutch on my car once, there was no way I was taking out the trans just to replace such an inexpensive part. Using the feel around method, I was able to change it without actually seeing what I was doing. It isn't easy but doesn't take too much time. It's available on Amazon. I don't remember how much but not much more than $50, I think.
As others have said there's a lockout. I will also say, this is the 2nd C5 I've owned, and so far I'm 2 for 2 on faulty lockouts. Neither one was very difficult to get into reverse, but they'd give a good buzz if you missed fifth. I still need to fix it, but I've only missed 5th a couple times.

Pretty sure that they can fail in the locked or unlocked position. One makes it hard to get in, one is like yours.

You must have bad luck
Oh well, there are worse problems. I'm not in a hurry to fix it, because frankly, the car has bigger problems. I'm never in a rush to slap it into 5th like I am 1-4. I think on this new car, I only buzzed reverse once back when I first got it, and was like "Oh, so we're doing this again."
I'll fix it after I fix the passenger actuator motor on the climate control, the compressor seals on the AC, get the shifter aligned good, figure out why my e-brake sometimes doesn't work, etc, etc, etc. lol
