I've read on how to and have used a VIN decoder, my question is does the VIN show the production date and does the ser. number reflect the car's number in regards to the total number of all C5's produced that year or in my case reflect the number of ZO6's it was of all the ZO6's produced in that year. Looking at a very clean stock 2002 with 69xxx miles on a 2 owner car(current owner has had it 11 yrs, always a CA. car) My concern is related to the valve spring issues that have been talked about so much and clutch longevity. This car I've been told has no track time FWIW. Sold my 2001.I was the 2nd owner on that one and it had the 6 speed in it as well. I sold it to a forum member and last I heard it had over 80k trouble free miles. Any reason to stay clear of a 2002 Z06? I'm still experiencing withdrawals. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It is my understanding that you cannot determine the build date by the VIN. Also, it is my understanding that GM hasn't been putting build dates on the Build Sheets since 2006.
As far as I am aware, the 2002 ZO6 are good builds, I know my 2003 ZO6 has been a good build and essentially problem free. I would replace the valve springs even if the 2002 is an early build before the valve spring issue started. The expense in replacing the valve springs is not that big of a deal. I would also have the coolant and cooling system hoses replaced at the same time if they haven't been replaced already.
If you like the price for the 2002 and the car feels and looks good, I would buy it.
I thought i found build dates by VIN somewhere and managed to find it again. Looks like the vehicle in question was built on Tuesday Dec 18, 2001. Here you go:

I would have checked the door jam but the car isn't local so I appreciate the registry. Also from what I've been reading wouldn't that build date put it smack dab in the group most prone to the valve spring issues? Read so many posts on that subject my head is swimming. , so was it ever determined when GM stepped in and the springs were no longer a concern after a certain production time. I.e Mid 2003 or something?
The federal certification sticker that is in your door jam will also list the month/year of the build.
If I was closer to San Jose that would of worked Moot point now, the owner decided he wanted to recoupe the $4k he put into wheels and tires a few years ago so I'll keep looking!
