Wow, that sucks. Lucky for you nobody was decapitated.
Happened to me with a T-Top fbody Camaro. Watching a t-top in your rearview mirror frisbee towards another vehicle at 65mph is a sickening feeling. I will never forget that and the fact it could have killed someone.
Glad you found a new one and nobody was hurt.

Ouch! Bummer! Glad no one was hurt and no other vehicle damaged.
Funny - when I lived in Surprise, and had to go to Gilbert I thought it was a long trip going that way.

Damn, that looks WAY worse than mine. The first time it happened it landed right side up, but busted the rear latch ($15 ebay) and the side wetherstrip is hashed on the ends (still need to replace). The second time (still can't believe I've done it twice) it landed paint side down and made a mess. I cleaned it up, but it needs to be repainted. I will likely buy a glass top rather than repaint. I loved my C4 glass roof, but I took that off once (car flexed like crazy).

Dude that sux.
I've had it worse though. I was at a local car show. I always show my two C5s with the tops off. Well it was one of those days where it would rain off and on, therefore, my tops went on and off thoughout the show. Fast forward. After the show I got on the road and about at 25 mph my 02's top went off and bam, landed right in front of my 98 (whom my girlfriend was driving). I was sooooo embarrassed as the road was packed with other motorist and car show members. I quickly ran back, grabbed it and tossed it in my passenger seat. It was f***ed up. I then went back to my girlfriend to ensure the 98's top was secured down. She said it was. So then I proceed home, about 15 minutes away. I get home and no girlfriend behind me. Weird. About 15 minutes later she comes rolling in. She is almost in tears. Once she got on the interstate and hit about 65 mph, the roof went flying. She pulled over but no one else did. She did her best to get the roof that was in the middle of the interstate but drivers kept coming. Finally there was a break in traffic and she got it. Her roof was more f***ed up than my was.
So that's my flying roof story. I had joined the flying roof club TWICE within about 5 minutes. About a $2100 dollar mistake.
By the way, I do NOT recommend Mid-America Corvette to repair them.

Sorry to see this video. I'm a member too of this embarrassing club. Mine was the painted top though. I have a purple "Remove Before Flight" steamer I put on the end of the visors whenever I remove the top now. Helps a lot. I think a person needs the visual thing hanging in their face. Doesn't matter what it is as long as you know what it means. All it takes is one little distraction (as you found out) and poof, done deal...

Chris - sorry to hear about and see the damage to your targa top. That sucks for sure. Glad no one was hurt and that you have found a replacement top that was available nearby.

I don't believe there are any other vehicles with removable targa tops on the market today. Even the 911 Targa is more of a hardtop convertible that electronically removes and stores the top in the rear hatch.

There will definitely be a new pre-flight checklist implemented when I get the new roof. And my wife is getting trained as well.

Burning Brakes
Happened to me in an 89 Camaro convertible. Both sides were latched down, hit a little bump and it came loose and went up like a sail at 65mph on the interstate. Didn't become detached from the car, but some of the metal frame pieces got bent and we had to hold it down the rest of the way.
