Default cooling

would it help to keep my c-5 cooler if I cut out the front licence plate area and put one of those mesh screens in place?

c5 cooler? only coolers on the c5 are the power steering cooler, rad and ac cond...so yes you have to keep all of those, it will help a lil to have a screen mesh in place , but you have to cut your bumper to for the screen to work correctly

If your radiator and A/C condenser have never been cleaned out, that might help the most in getting your car to run cooler.

You would have to cut into your shroud as well.

Also, unless you're tracking, you won't cool anything down to an appreciable degree with just that cutout. The only thing you end up doing is taking in more air under the hood at speed, which increases lift and drag. Hood vents will be far more effective.

No, not really. The shroud blocks the radiator from the front, so it will be virtually pointless coolant temps.

Can you define "cooler"? Coolant temps around 190-210 will be normal and there is no real reason to try to get the coolant temp below that.

Are the lower air dams in place and in good condition? They are designed to direct incoming air from under the car into the A/C condenser and radiator. You may also want to look up under that opening to see if there is any debris that may be reducing the airflow.

The LS1 is designed to run hotter than many engines in the past. And putting a mesh screen in the license plate area isn’t going to do much without other mods being done.

If you are going to open up the front license plate fascia, it will allow more air into the engine bay but have little effect on the air going to the radiator. Road Racers use that method but channel the incoming air through the air filter into the TB. The ambient air entering into the intake manifold is usually considerably cooler than engine bay air. Cooler air allows more dense (more oxygen) to enter the combustion chamber--a few more HP as a result.

As mentioned previously in this thread you need to clean the radiator and a/c condensor. Unless this has been done previously, the C5 is notorious for ingesting large amounts of dirt into the cooling area. You won't believe how much gets up in there over a long period of time. The best thing to do is carefully separate both cores and clean in between. Compressed air works very well, a hose would be even better. you can separate the two cores without removing anything if done with care. This procedure alone can lower your temps quite a bit if haven't been done before. A screen covering the large opening where the air goes up into the area will keep larger items like leaves etc. from getting stuck up there.
