One way is to look at Best Buy for product and installation. I was surprised at the quality alpine head unit, alpine speakers and amp that I bought and had installed.
The PAC Audio ROEM-VET1 and Axxess XSVI-2004 adapters are needed when replacing just the head unit leaving the rest of the system intact.
You can take this a step further by upgrading the 2 front and 2 rear twiddlers with 2-way coaxial speakers that can be just bolted-on in place of the OEM ones.
I don't know if this answers your question, but more details are here.
I guessing these question are getting a little old, but I am going to confirm what I think is correct.
If I replace the HU with aftermarket unit and these adapter that you listed PAC Audio ROEM-VET1 and Axxess XSVI-2004
Replace twiddlers of my choice front and rear ( thinking JBL GX 302 and GX 602) I have a coupe.
My Bose door subs will still work? is that correct or am I missing something?

That's correct, as AE Guy just answered above. Let me just clarify that the adapters mentioned (Axxess XSVI-2004, PAC Audio ROEM-VET1) is one or the other, not both. Sorry if that was not clear.
Upgraded all 4 speakers with Infinity recently with good results. While the major car stereo website said the fronts would not fit, they did. Backs are drop in with harnesses as others have shown. Total cost was around $100. You could buy better but in this car, not necessary IMO. Save high end for your quiet sedan.
doesn't interface with the Serial Data Bus, it doesn't preserve RAP and requires the extra switched connection. The headunit's OEM harness lacks this connection, but it can be easily brought from an unused harness (except '04) in the passenger's footwell that has 3 wires (yellow: switched via Fuse 11, orange: always hot via Fuse 7 and black: ground).
Just to add one more layer to this (sorry all), since I'm considering the same thing:
From what I understand the Retrosound Newport 1.5 DIN Head Unit does not need an adapter to work with the stock setup. I like the semi-OEM look of the thing, and I really only want the connectivity options (USB, AUX, Bluetooth) and improved sound. To upgrade to the Newport and better speakers I would only need the head unit and front and rear twiddlers (also probably JBL GX 302 and GX 602)?

You may want to double-check that... From their website:
Note: If your vehicle came equipped with a Delco/Bose audio system, an adapter may be needed to use the Newport with your amplified factory speakers.
This interface is needed because the C5 Bose system doesn't use standard signals. This system is based on a modified Delco head-unit, a Bose DSP box and subwoofer amps that use pseudo-differential low level signals along with fully differential speaker level signals. The common signals are not standard and have a DC offset, so they cannot be grounded.

Damn you Crutchfield! Thanks for the info, GCG, will adjust my plans accordingly.

I'm really happy with my Infinity Kappa's. I installed a 6.5" coax on Metra adapter plates in place of the Bose subs and I reused the 3.5 mounting from the old adapter to add the Infinity 3.5" midrange to the plate, and put a Bass Blocker capacitor on the mid range to keep low end distortion out. I used the Crutchfield speaker baffle buckets to mount them into the doors. Front speakers sound fantastic. Very happy with the results with an Alpine HU and a Pioneer 750 watt amp. I'm mounting the Kappa woofers with the externally mounted tweeters in place of the rear speakers this weekend. I threw one of these in the trunk well facing the cockpit https://www.alpine-usa.com/product/sbr-s8-4 and am very impressed with it.

Wow that thing is $400. You can get so much better cheaper.

What Infinity Series did you purchase. Looking between Infinity and JBL.

I know it’s pricey but my thinking was based on the info it was just plug and play, so wasn’t so bad if it sss the only piece I needed. I just don’t love the spacer needed for single DIN and the double DIN conversion is even more expensive. I kinda like the OEM look of the unit, but yeah, $400.

Have you considered adding an Aux input jack to the OEM headunit?
You can do this via DIY for just $3 (actually the jack is on sale now for $1.25 here) following this step-by-step write-up, or by sending the OEM headunit to one of the available vendors that provide this service.
