I'm enjoying this thread going off the rails. Thanks y'all.
If your car isn't too expensive and you don't want to spend much money, might I recommend paint correction instead, or perhaps, just nothing at all? If it looks good from 20 feet, don't look at it too closely from 2 feet.
Hello, While I’ve not owned my own 03 corvette very long I can say I’ve repaired the body’s including paint work to at least 25 of these cars over the years. I’m soon to be 66 yrs young, I’ve been a bodyman all my life, my father did it all of his life staring right after WW II. I stared full time right out of high school in 1971 but started painting cars part time in my dads shop when I was just 15. I can say with certainty that it makes very little difference if you own a Dodge truck or a Corvette or a Mac truck in the actual painting of said vehicle. WHAT DOES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IS HOW GOOD THE ACTUAL PAINT IS AND HOW. LONG YOU SPENT GETTING IT READY TO PAINT, THE PREP WORK!!! Both of these factors make a big difference in the final product. Usually the more you spend the better it will look. In the Kansas City area a quality paint job on ANY car starts at $3500.00 and up. That will include removing all necessary trim, including bumpers, door handles, mirrors, etc. That price does not include any major bodywork suck as cracked gel coat, excessive rock chips, or collision damage. It’s all very labor intensive, taking many hours to get it ready for paint. With all of that in mind Maaco does not come to mind as s quality body shop. They specialize in collision repair not the restoration of corvettes. They offer discounted services by using CHEAP PAINT, MARGINALLY TRAIN STAFF, WITH FAST TURNAROUND BEING THE BUSINESS GOAL!!!
Is that the kind of shop your looking for? Ask to see a before and after car, look closely when it’s showed to you. Ask about a written warranty ( at least 5 yrs) be of any use. Ask how many corvettes they’ve worked on, Do other owners recommend them??????
My two cents worth. Bob
A friend of mine had his 3rd Gen Camaro painted inside his one car garage. Went from white to black. Car came out awesome! A guy local to him did it over a couple of weekends. And anyone that has a black car knows how that color shows EVERYTHING! So, ask around. You will find someone local that will want some side money as long as you aren't in a rush. I can see what he paid for a ballpark. They stripped the car to bare metal!
I would suggest if anyone is using Waco to make sure they are using additives that allow for the paint to expand and contract a small the body panels are composite..
I saw the photos of the black 163k mile corvette..looked awesome..
Just paint the rear trunk lid and maybe have them paint the doors..
See how inexpenxoensively you can get the job done...
Remember it's a ten grand car..don't spend a lot of money on it...
Prep the surfaces the best you can. Tip the guy actually doing the work before he starts ..
And either sell or enjoy your freshly painted car.
Love those wheels
Thanks. Had to get the center bore machined out by like 1/16" to fit my hubs. Just barely too small. But they fit now and they definitely fill out the fenders.
