I am looking to ship my Targa top. The dimensions seem to be 46X27 inches. Not sure what type of box/etc to use for this. Also trying to keep the shipping economical - got ideas?
You might have alot of luck dropping by a local bicycle retailer and asking them for a couple of bike boxes. They are the height and thickness you need, then you can cut the length to suit. Many will give you foam packing materials if you ask nicely / provide a few dollars for coffee.
Make sure you tightly pack cardboard or foam into the cavity formed by the tops curve in the box.

Good luck if you do ship the top - unless you pack the top very carefully and securely, it can be damaged easily in transit. And don't rely on words such as fragile or do not drop on the outside of the package to protect the top. Plus good luck getting the shipper to cover any damages, even with insurance, if you pack the top yourself.
In the past others who have done the shipping have taken it to a place like the UPS store and had them box up the top - that way it is harder for them to claim it was packed improperly should something happen.
Not saying you can't pack it yourself and have the top arrive in perfect shape - many have done so successfully. But just be forewarned if something goes wrong.
I'd be careful using UPS. I'm in the process of battling them because of damage to a targa I had shipped to me. The word fragile which was written all over the box has no meaning to UPS. One corner of the top is smashed and broken, including a molding piece. It was packed with bubble wrap and Styrofoam, along with each corner wrapped with Styrofoam. And they still smashed it. The box looked like it was dropped from a great height, and landed on one corner. There were tears in the cardboard and indentations like it had been walked on. After I sent them a ton of pictures and descriptions, they now say they'll only deal with the shipper, even though I'm the buyer and have it in my possession. They say they'll settle with the shipper leaving me out of the process. The shipper doesn't know how it looked when I received it, nor how extensive the damage is???? It seems like a screwy way to do things, but I'll let it run it's course before I go ballistic. The shipper is a good guy, so I don't expect him to screw me. I did purchase through PayPal, so if push comes to shove, they'll at least help in the refund...........I hope!

As my son's Mosquito baseball coach told me once, "You know what UPS stands for, doncha? Use Purolator Stupid".
Key is packing. No shipper is without fault. Whenever you think you have it packed well, think again.
Good Luck!
Bang on. I've shipped 1000+ pairs of speaker stands (side biz) all over the world, packed like I mean it. All US and Canada bound (= probably 95% of total sales) via UPS. Not one damaged yet.

You can also ship using Greyhound buses. Buyer must pick it up at a Greyhound depot though, no home delivery, and that is much cheaper than UPS or FedEx, and probably less likely to get damaged.

I have to disagree with using Greyhound. They move people, not products. Your precious top is just another suitcase tossed and pushed aside at every stop.
