I am looking at purchasing an Elite Engineering oil catch can for my 2004 C5 and would like to know if I should purchase the check valve and the Clean-Side Oil Separator too?
I've seen a few pictures where people are only running the oil catch can and nothing else. Just trying to see if the Clean-side separator and check valve are a must on the LS motors.
Thank you for the input. I did check out the MM and noticed on big difference between the Mighty Mouse and Elite is that Mighty Mouse has a filter and is getting air from the outside, where Elite does not have this and is more of a closed system (for the lack of a better term).
Guess I will have to do some investigating as to why one has an open element while the other does not.

A catch can typically routes oil vapors back into the intake, which over time can coat the intake slightly with residual oil contained in the vapors (this is what your PCV does that a catch can is in theory supposed to reduce, except a catch can will reduce it to a much lower level) whereas a vented can lid will vent some of that vapor back into the atmosphere. The biggest immediately draw-back I can think of that will occur with a vented can will be 1) you'll likely smell vapors more as they'll come in through the HVAC and 2) you'll have another item to service down the road in changing out the filter.
Regardless per the posts above plenty of people run basic circulated style catch cans with no ill results.
Thank you. Yep exactly the way a PCV system should work in theory. I worked as an auto tech for 10 years before going into the aerospace as an aircraft test technician.
I think I will be going the route of Elite just due to the fact that I am not sending more pollutants back into the atmosphere with the open element style. Not that there's anything wrong with those. Also I think running a PCV system the way it was designed and just adding a catch can in the loop seems better in my opinion.
Thank you again for the input on this. Very much appreciated and helpful.
What is the check valve and where does it go in the catch can installation?
Elite Engineering shows that it is used on the "Exit Port" of the oil catch can.
I am not sure how many people use that and/or the Clean Side Oil Separator. Maybe those who are using the Elite products can chime in on if they are using the check valve and'or the Clean side separator.
