Default C5 in storage, kinda

Even before I bought my C6 I rarely drove my C5 anymore and pretty much kept it tucked away in my shop. I have put maybe 500 miles on it in the last 3 or 4 years. I drive it around the block or to dinner with the GF once every 3 or 4 months. Question being is it bad to let it sit that way and expect to just get in and drive when and where I want? I keep a charger on it, has fresh oil etc. I do start it up monthly and let it get up to temp, run a/c, heater. Is there any different maintenance that need to be done on a car that rests so much? Thanks

You'll be fine. Countless collector cars kept that way.

OK thanks, I was just curious about, coolant, brake fluid etc. Didn't want some huge maintenance bill years from now for "oh you should have done this and that". Thanks again

I had a '66 for 31 years that was used exactly the same as your C5. Never had an issue except changing the battery every 8-9 years. Keep an eye on the coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. I used a battery tender to keep it charged when not in use.

Letting a Corvette sit in a garage and not drive it like you stole it for 31 years is amazing. Luckily, I do not have that disease.

No problem with the car, BUT................TIRES are a problem, Even with "0" miles, please ensure that you change to NEW tires at least every five (5) years!!

I agree about the tires, but if it was my car, I wouldn't just "drive it around the block a couple of times", every once in a while. I would at least drive it 10-15 miles, to get it FULLY warmed up, especially the engine oil. Otherwise, natural condensation, within the engine, will destroy the oil in short order.

Over the years, I wound up in a situation where I had 2 "summer cars", and when I was still working full-time, it wasn't an issue, as the daily commute, "to and fro", was 50 miles. So no matter which car I took to work, on any given day, it got a reasonable amount of exercise.

Once I retired, I found that I was driving less, and one or the other car was sitting more and more. After losing some of my storage space (sad situation), it just stopped being fun with the extra car, so I kept the 'Vette and sold the Z/28.......

The rule of thumb for condensation problems is 20 minutes of full warm engine temp, with the stainless exhaust we have today maybe able to get by with less, lost my 77 BMW mc exhaust in less than a year being a mile off the coast n 1.5 miles from work

New tires AT LEAST EVERY 5 YEARS? You guys are getting carried away.
Any tire you buy isn't going to be brand new. So say your newly bought tires were made 1 year ago (not uncommon). So now you're going to replace them in 4 years? Who does that?

Nissan and Mercedes recommends 6 years max on tires.

Michelin says professional inspections required at 5 years, no more than 10 years max.

https://www.michelinman.com/US/en/he...new-tires.html

According to this article by Tire Rack, Ford, GM and Chrylser also adhere to the six year limit.

This includes normal driving, though. A car that's hardly ever driven and is parked inside out of direct sunlight (UV rays) should be considered in a different category. Tires under this condition should be on a case to case basis.
