Default Programming key fob

Hi there, if any one can tell me is it worth buying the fob for the car separate from the dealer and if so how would I go about programming it without having to go to the dealer and spending several hundreds of dollars to have it programmed.

I bought a used one from a key fob vendor for my '04. Cost me only $30 and I had no problem programming it myself. Just follow the directions in your owner manual.

These work with the C5.
Amazon Amazon

Here is the programming procedure.

1. Turn ignition on.

2. Turn radio off.

3. Press Driver Information Center(DIC) RESET button.

4. Press OPTIONS button on DIC until display is blank.

5. Press and hold RESET button for 3 seconds.

6. Press OPTIONS button until FOB TRAINING is displayed.

7. Press RESET button to begin programming sequence.

8. Simultaneously press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on first remote for 13
seconds. Message will appear when remote is programmed. Repeat this step for
additional remotes.

The key fob is different for 97-99 vs 2000 to 2004

The early one can cost up to $100.
I just convert my 98 to use the later ones and only paid 7.99 for each key fob. Waiting for my tpms sensor since those are cheaper too

You do need to be aware of the differences (also I believe it's 97-00 and 01-04, as the FOBs correspond to the type of TPMS' used as they go off the same transmitter). If you own a 97-00 you're going to have a fairly difficult time getting a FOB to program & sync. They have a lot of issues that are not very easy to remedy, with most of those issues being rectified with the later style. Considering the relatively high cost of early FOBs and TPMS sensors, it can be comparable to buying the entire setup from the later style and swapping everything out.

Also know going to a dealer to have them "program" it will result in them doing the exact same process as above using the DIC. The dealer doesn't have any sort of specialized equipment to sync the FOBs; the technology for that wasn't in C5s when they were new. They would likely experience the same hardships programming a 97-00 FOB that an individual would.
