Default HVAC Panel LED light replacement question!

I am looking to upgrade the old dingy lights in my 99FRC HVAC panel to LEDs. Problem is, I can’t seem to find any confirmed links or pages that show the sort of LEDs I’d need to complete the job. A couple hours of googling have only found results of people who used to do these sorts of jobs but are no longer active, but at no point did hey discuss the sort of LEDs necessary.

my FRC has the standard HVAC panel (without zone control), if anybody has any information on this you’d be helping me out a lot!

Contact Dave @ c5led.com. He modifies/repairs HVAC controllers with LEDs and does other C5 related repairs. He may be willing to point you in the right direction. You might be better off just letting him make the changes you want. He did my dual zone controller awhile back and I was extremely pleased with the results. The cost is reasonable, he gets it done fast, and he stands behind his work.

These guys look like they have a pretty good grasp on doing conversions. If your looking to do it yourself or have them do it, I'm sure they will point you in the right direction with the info your seeking.

Thanks guys! I’ll look into those options right away. These dingy lights are driving me nuts.

Likely not the cause, but do you have your dash dimmer turned up?

Yeah I do, the old lights for the HVAC are just dingey and dim.

especially next to all all the other LED upgrades I’ve already done.

So as recommend I contacted Dave from C5LED. He will sell me the LEDs for the unit at a reasonable price but due to sucky people in his past business adventures cannot offer any technical advise for the process.

mulling it over before I make a decision.

Dave charged me $113 to custom fit all new bulbs according to my preferences and increase the output of the digital numbers as well. Not worth the aggravation to do it myself. IMO.

It's easy to do yourself. I did my dual zone climate control. Took me a couple of hours with a el cheapo soldiering iron, a soldier sucker, some soldier wick remover and some lead soldier.

I decided to stick with the incandescents though, as you loose the dimming feature.

well that’s good to hear. I’d be absolutely upgrading to LEDs though, and as such I’d have to also soldier in resistors. Not exactly sure where in the line to put them, but it’d probably be obvious once I have them in hand. Among the reasons I don’t want to send it away, the car is my DD and I live in VA. It’s hot and I don’t want to lose my A/C for a couple weeks.

I put LEDs in my dual zone climate control and still have the dimming feature.

actually yeah, I was told I’d lose dimming feature from installing LEDs around the other interior locations as well... but they all still dim just fine.

The neo wedge LEDs have resistors built in them. I found that it is much easier to take the LED out of the neo wedge housing and use it, rather than to solder a resistor on a regular LED light.

I swapped out my entire interior with LEDs.

Didn’t lose my dimming either, not that I care, I like the ‘circus’ of colors I have. Dave is in Georgia and turnaround was less than a week both times I used him.

They are very pricey. A lot more than Dave at c5led.com. I’ve done most of the other work myself for a fraction of their prices.

Its interesting to here about the leds still dimming, could you elaborate? The stock dimmer is a rheostat and would dim much faster than the original incandescents. I assume it would be completely dim by about the half way mark, wouldn't that look out of wack with the dash display (blacklights)?

I am having a nightmare trying to find the stock incandescents for the DIC cluster. You can get generic ones from ebay but they don't have the blue rubber shield around them. I'm thinking switching to LEDs might just be the easier option..

Also great advise about removing the bulbs from the neo wedge, and then not having to use a resistor!
