The side of my center console is showing some wear, and what I would like to know is if there is anything I can do to repair it or if I just need to replace the whole thing (not an easy part to find.). The surface is starting to scuff or peel. See pic. The 50th Ann. Ed. does not have the hard black type found in other years, but these are covered with shale-colored leather (or something). Thanks for your ideas.
I have a 03 50th Aniv Coupe and have had my bezel and console out and in more times than I can count. The finish is not leather but likely a sprayed on coating from the factory that provides the texture. You can see it peeling off in your pic. The black bezels are done the same.
Pretty sure your only options are:
Live with it
Strip or sand all of the coating off and repaint
Have a paint shop do all this for you
Buy a replacement that is still in good condition
If you want to go with option 4, mine will be available soon and is in excellent condition. Recently replaced with a double din version.
See if there is a color match from SEM spray on coatings. They are made for automotive interiors. I sprayed my airbag with the black coating and it looks factory.
They probably make your color.
Find an SEM dealer, they may be able to help get you a match.
SEM is not a paint, it's a coating like rubber.

Been there done that still have the partial SEM cans.
The only coating I found that matches GM's Medium Dark Neutral well is ColorBond's GM Medium Dark Neutral.
ColorBond's GM Shale also matches the lighter Shale of other interior parts in the 03 50th.
I suggest that before you recoat your bezel:
Remove the bezel from the car. Always handle the part wearing rubber gloves. Wipe down the areas to be coated using denatured alcohol to remove any contaminants. Use an "Adhesion Promoter" spray before spraying the color coat. Allow 10-15 minutes between light coats. After several light coats use a clear coat to finish the project. Clear coats are available from gloss to flat. I used SEM Low Luster Clear 13023. A bit more gloss than OEM, but I like it. Plasticoat makes a true Flat clear coat. Again multiple light coats with 10-15 min between coats. Once done with all coatings let the part sit overnight before reinstalling.
