I live in Covina near LA and the past few days it's been inexplicably close to 117 degrees outside. My baby has been running way too hot for comfort; especially the tranny fluid. So the highest I've seen on the tranny has been 220 or so and what I'd rather see is between 180 and 195 tops. Fluid thermal breakdown increases exponentially with every ~5 degrees so I kinda don't even want to drive the car, lol. I was thinking about an external tranny cooler, but wanted to see if anyone has had any luck with simply changing to a Dewitt direct fit with a TOC. My coolant has been a little higher than I'd like too so I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.
Any help on this subject would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Also, since we're here, if anyone has one they're looking to sell, let me know. I have the late model radiator fittings on a 2001.

The ideal range for fluid temperature is between 175 and 225 degrees, You should have no problem running 220 for limited periods of time. No need to panic.
Ive been through this before like yourself here in ca. My trans temp would frequently be in the 200’s. I purchased a b&m’s 70274 plate cooler and completely bypassed the radiator. My trans now runs much cooler. Even on spirited runs ive never seen it above 185 and thats on warm days. I put the exchanger in front of the radiator so it see’s cooler air and radiator fans pull air though it when not moving.
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I won't be able to put anything there because I'm going to be installing an intercooler there sometime soon. Those are awesome Temps though brother. Man I hate seeing it crawl its way that high.
Hey Jr, thanks for your response. The problem is that it goes on for long periods of time. Yesterday, it stayed like that for hours while I went about my day, running errands. Also, that's the temp at a good consistent speed on the freeway. Gosh, if I got on it and started enjoying the car, I'm sure it would go way above that temp.
Hopefully it cools down before everything burns up..
Lol, right? Yeah man, I want to set the car up so that it never has that issue, barring me driving into a volcano. I want to drive it to Vegas and other places like that and don't want to worry about the temp. I had this issue with my 66 Lemans and had Mattson's here in California make me a radiator. It never got hotter than the fan turn on set-point. I might go ahead and go there again, but I want to see if this will do the tranny a significant help first. And I think me doing the installation of a Dewitt might end up being cheaper.

After a little more research it seems like maybe I should just find a good place to mount an external cooler like you were saying, Semper, just not in front of the radiator. Maybe I can just get a Dewitt radiator without a TOC and find a good mounting place for the external one. Someone on this forum mounted theirs under the drivers side headlight somehow.
I also installed a dewitts radiator with the cool it remote mod and temps look good even on hot days. Just didnt make sense to me to run trans fluid through the radiator. If i lived in a cold climate i prob wouldnt have done it. If you can find somewhere to mount a tranny cooler that sees airflow it should work for you.
I thought about an EOC as well. For me with the bigger radiator and trans cooler installed and bypassing radiator, my temps all look good so i didnt see a need for it. If i regularly tracked my car then i would have gone that route for further cooling.
