I’ve had two cut at Lowe’s. Both worked perfect and they did it no charge.
I had a "non-chip" key cut for my 4runner at Lowes - the machine they have was very trick - you just "plug the key in" - the machine reads it - tells the operator which blank to grab - he removes the original, puts the blank (back into the same hole) - and the key is cut! Evidently it stores the pattern internally for cutting - no "clamping the 2 keys together" like the old days.
But wait - are those patterns stored for eternity? Hacking of the lock machine by thieves
Most of the hardware stores today use computers to cut keys, the person doesn't need knowledge anymore, they stick then in the machine, and the machine cuts a perfect key.

BUT, if the equipment used to cut the keys is not kept sharp and clean, the chance of a burr or wrong cut is much higher. Personally, I trust the independent key lock folks then the box stores to maintain the equipment.
