Default Getting a new key cut. Where ?

Whas up brothers. Just wondering where would be a better place to get my new vats key blank cut. I have an old school hardware store near me but I was thinking that Home Depot would probably have a newer better more advanced key cutting machine. The key is already matched to my cars vats number. So just need it cut to match my existing key. Thx for any info.

I had mine done at a locksmith. I'd go with the old school hardware store before trying the big box store where employees lack experience and training.

I would trust the "old school" hardware store before HD... Anyone with a key cutting machine can cut your key since it is already matched to your car.

I agree, once cut, make sure the key works before leaving the shop parking lot.

I got mine made at a GMC dealer. Just give them the VIN number and any GM dealer can do it or order it. Cost me about 25 bucks.

I’d get it done by either a locksmith or at a dealer.

I’m guessing you did not get the blank at a dealer?
I ordered a new one b/c the old key was so worn it was having a hard time unlocking the ignition - duplicating the old one would have defeated the purpose.
When I picked it up, it was was already coded and cut.

If there is an Ace Hardware near you, they should have chip keys, the right machine, and folks happy to help.

I got my blank online, and went to Ace Hardware. The elderly guy looked at it like he really wasn't confident. That made me feel the same...But it works like a charm.Charged me $4.00, I think.

I've had a few cut by Home Depot, and they didn't even charge for it.

If you buy the blank from them many locksmiths/key cutting stores will cut it for your free.

Another option is to go to a local locksmith shop. They did mine for $8. They also had a tester to verify that the chip was the correct resistance value.

Dealer here $32 for key and cut.

Four locksmiths wanted $100 or more.

I’ve had two cut at Lowe’s. Both worked perfect and they did it no charge.

There is NOTHING special to cutting a VATS key. It is cut the same way as any other key.
You can get double sided blanks on eBay once you know which blank you need. Measure
the resistor pellet with an ohm meter and look it up for the correct VATS key blank number.
Take the blank along with a known good key to any place that cuts key and have it made.

Thx guys. Got it done at a locksmith. Believe it or not. The dealer wouldn't cut it because I didn't buy it from them. Lol. Then Home Depot says you gotta buy the key from us. They don't even carry vats keys. Losers. Well works great and cost 10 bux to cut it. Thx again.
