It seems that people tend to stereotype groups based on the car, and it isn't unique to Corvette owners.
Prius owners tend to get lumped into a particular group. Subaru seems to also.
Around where I live, if I were to unfairly judge Mustang owners based on the way I've seen some behave, I would assume Ford administers an IQ test to prospective buyers and rejects those that score too high. That, however, would be an inaccurate and unfair assessment of Mustang owners. I don't see near as many Camaros to compare.
Most of it has nothing to do with it being a corvette, some people are just miserable and will lash out at anything that remotely looks like you may be happy.
Back in the early 80s my wife drove our 79 to work. First time one of the warehouse workers came out and said the "must be nice" crap. He had the nerve to ask what it cost per month. She told him the same as your bar tab and smokes. It's all about your choices.
Too funny..... Here's one of my stories. I was 29 when I bougt my '66 L79 back in '88. A guy asks me at a gas station if my dad knew I was driving around in his car. I said it wasn't my Dad's, it was mine. He asked what I paid a month (similar to what you experienced)..... to which I replied "nothing". He turned around to his buddies and said "I was right, his Daddy bought it for him. It never dawned on him that I could have paid cash (which I actually did). I said nothing, finished pumping my gas and drove away. I'm almost 59 now so folks don't ask if it's my dad's car anymore.... True story.
Some members of our Corvette Club (Corvettes North Car Club, Duluth MN) took a 2 day cruise to House on the Rock and the Iola Car show last month. We stopped at Ray's Market, Colby Wi. I had been there many times before and they have great smoked sausages etc. Anyway, the owner asked if we could park our cars in front of his business so he could put a photo on his facebook page. Here is the photo (I hope). https://www.facebook.com/256593287736588/photos/a.912238238838753.1073741829.256593287736588/1888989397830294/?type=3&theater . We usually get positive comments and admiring looks where ever we go.

I would have to agree, I have made jokes about this in the past to a few of our friends: Subaru Owners are in either of 2 job categories: Government or Education. They used to think I was just picking on them, so I challenged them to prove me wrong. After a couple of weeks, they all brought me the bet payoff....

We've owned three Subarus, daughter used to work at the local Subaru dealer, she drives a '98 Impreza wagon that is the best $3500 ever spent anywhere. Great cars, we love them. Not one government or education employee in any direction of the family tree either! Of course I'm just a Corvette-owning, gold-chain-wearing, mid-life-crisis lout who doesn't understand them furrin' cars neither.

I bought a new Subaru in '98. Never worked for the government or in education, either. Stereotypes really don't work.

There is one in every crowd..., OK apparently 2. Just so you know, that isn't a badge of honor!
I was thinking back, Subaru Brats, don't count, they were cool but interesting..., especially for the "launchers" from the back pick up bed!

$40k for a new 1/2 ton ? I was just looking at 2018 Silverados on the lot at my local dealer. All of then had a sticker of $50k and higher...average was a $55K MSRP. As for the topic, I get compliments all the time. I don't think I ever got a rude comment.
In my own defense - I did say " In an age where a new 1/2 ton pick-up easily costs over $40K" - and I was including the discount that pretty much every manufacturer is giving ...

Buying any car is not a badge of honor. Unless you believe you are what you drive. I bought my new Subaru in '98 because my crippled mother had difficulty getting into my truck and I needed a 4 wheel drive because of my driveway. At that time the Subaru was one of the only 4 wheel drive cars available.

Lighten up Francis, it was a joke.
The situation I was referring to was from when we lived in Madison. We had one of the guys in our Corvette Club that worked at Don Miller at the time, he was the one that made the original observation. I always thought it was funny!

I agree
your awesome for sharing your time and car with kids in need!
I always get the looks when I drive the 68 with its searing eyeball red paint, always a lot of positive comments. If someone gets crazy, I just say that it is not mine, it is a customers and getting it running again.. I'm 41 and look younger than my age...
but it I do the same if I'm at a show and there is a young boy or girl that likes the car I let them sit in there and dream...parents really cannot believe it either...
my all time best was a boy with autism that was not verbal at all and was very active though with his motor skills. He was attracted to my car because of the red paint from what his mom said. I said let's let him sit in it and she couldn't believe it. She was worried he would break something- so was I, but that boy sat in there and I closed the door- you wear a 68 it's so tight,
and when he started making motor sounds and driving sounds it brought the whole crowd that now gathered to tears, me included. His mom couldn't believe it...
Great story! Thank you!
You're to be commended for the care and concern you showed. Your experience is much like so many people mention from the CF events at St Jude's.

I feel the same just reading your story. Wonderful! Many years ago I went to the local Walmart. I try like anyone of us to park as far away from civilization as possible. I come out and see from the distance a car parked next to me, go figure. I also noticed two people standing next to my car. I'm wondering what they are doing there. When I finally walk up to my car I see it is an elderly couple, like at least in the 80 years range. They turn to me and say they hope I didn't mind but they were just admiring my car. Many decades ago when they were younger they had a Corvette and used to travel all over in it. They were reminiscing about it, wishing they could still get in and out of one so they could relive their dreams. It made me feel real good to have experienced that.
My insurance agent (we are pretty familiar with one another) jabbed me with a mid-life crisis joke the moment I walked in after parking my C5Z at his office the day I bought it. I’m 27 lol.

Take it as a compliment! Just means the C5 if well kept looks like a million bucks, meanwhile, little do they know a Honda Civic is more expensive lol.
Yes. And by those closest to me. It is something I enjoy and is my hobby. If they don't get it then they are the ones with the problem. Life is short and filled with duty and obligations. There is nothing wrong being able to find something to enjoy as a product of your labors.
