Default Corvettes@Carlisle Traffic Problems Must Read

I am a member of the NCRS Mid Atlantic chapter I just received this e-mail from our President about two traffic problems. If you are coming up I 81 from Virginia the first will affect you. The second one is in Pennsylvania on I 81 north of Shippensburg.

Please read and consider resending to all MAC members – and anyone else you think would want to know this.

FYI – I am on a personal road trip today, traveled North on I-81 through VA, then into West VA and then into PA and beyond Carlisle – I ran into 2 major traffic delays. If you are planning to attend Corvettes at Carlisle be prepared for MAJOR traffic delays in 2 places – the second is impacting traffic in and around Carlisle.

1. There is an “emergency bridge repair” on a bridge in West VA, on I-81 in the north bound lane. There are temporary signs up as far south as Harrisonburg VA alerting drivers to this delay in WVA. The delay is significant, about 90 minutes – it is down to one lane. No way to get around it – many trucks and cars bailed off of 81 and on to Rt 11 north – it was a mess. The repair work does not look like it will be completed any time soon – highly recommend factoring additional time into your trip – also recommend calling WVA DOT and inquire if work is complete.

2. This one was worse that the first and there were no warning signs. We had smooth sailing from WVA to just north of Shippensburg PA on I-81. Then, about 10 miles north of Shippensburg traffic came to a complete stop – we were 9 miles from Carlisle and exit 44, it took 3 (THREE) hours to go those 9 miles. We got off at exit 44 for a rest stop at a gas station – this is the same exit you would use to go to the fairgrounds. I spoke to a local in the restaurant. He said there is construction on I-81 just north of exit 44, they are installing a pipe line – has been going on for weeks – will not be completed soon. Not only is traffic on I-81 north all jammed up, it also is affecting traffic flow on all roads leading into Carlisle and within Carlisle as well. This will definitely frustrate travelers during Corvette days at the fairgrounds, regardless where you are staying or what direction you are coming from. Again, I would recommend that someone call the PA DOT and ask when the work on I-81 just north of exit 44 will be done.

Good luck to all those going to the show. Sounds like it will be an inconvenience getting there.

I will be coming from Cumberland Maryland. Sounds like the first one will not be an issue but the second one will.

I could hit the turnpike in Bedford PA and go that way and be ok right?

The way I usually go is 68 to 70 to 81.

As long as the NJ Turnpike - PA Turnpike route is clear I'll be happy.

Sorry, but another update, 81 SOUTH was backed up 7 miles this morning. If you are coming south to Carlisle via 81, please check your navigation app for traffic. If you are travelling through the area before 9 am, you will be good, after that, who knows. "if" you see traffic is stopped/congested between Carlisle, mile marker 45, to Mechanicsburg, mile marker 57 please use these directions. Take exit 61. At the top of the ramp, turn right. This is SR944, Wertzville Rd. Follow SR 944 west. You will travel "about" 9 miles until you come to a T intersection. (you will be travelling on a country road the whole way) There is a turn off to the left at the base of the mountain, about 4 miles or so from when you left 81. If you start going up a mountain, you passed the slight curve. It is marked. At the T intersection, RT34 Spring Rd. turn left, south. Continue on SR34 Spring Rd. for a couple miles, it will feed right into the front gate of the fairgrounds. WHEN YOU TURN LEFT ON SR34 Spring Rd., DO NOT TURN RIGHT ONTO SR944 AGAIN. (it's odd, SR944 at the stop sign does not continue straight, it is several tenths of a mile south of the road you were just on, odd, Pa., can't explain it) DO NOT TURN RIGHT ON SR944. The weather forecast is unbelievable, 80 degrees Thursday through Saturday. I believe this will cover all the PM messages I have received. See you there.

Good to know. Thank you. I'll be coming from NE Pa so I may just take routes 11 and 15 south from Danville. Maybe avoid all the problem..

I have been going the same way in every year. Coming from 81 north take the Wertzvill Rd. The best way in. Follow psp6158 directions.

Any update on 81 north? I have monitored traffic on my iPhone every morning and it only showed “red” yesterday for a brief period. I just hate taking the turnpike.

I came in from NJ and the only traffic was a ‘red zone’ just west of Allentown on 78. The area referred to by the op was not an issue.
