Doh!
Bought a low mileage 2002 C5 that had belonged to the dealer's brother. The car is like new and as near as I can tell, flawless. The only problem is that it had a tape deck which I replaced myself with an OEM Bose CD player purchased on the forum and surprisingly, didn't screw anything up. Long story short, the car came with the extra top stowed in the rear and after a month or so, I decided to switch tops. Once I removed the other top from its storage place I discovered three storage compartments. The middle one contained a 12 disc CD player still in the plastic which gave my son a good chuckle.

His car came with the CD changer in the trunk which means there is no CD player in the dash. He put in the dash CD player which he did not need to do. Probably should have checked his car out a little better before swapping dash unit.

The OEM CD changer in the trunk is notorious for having issues, even on low mileage cars. As GM has exhausted all their OEM supplies for it also if it happens to fail then most owners are typically SOL unless they can source a good used unit.
And yeah this is one of those things that would have paid to do a little research. C5s were equipped with two Delco stereo options. Either they came with the single CD player or the tape deck with CD changer in the rear.

I took the changer and mounting brackets out of the back of my 7,700 mile coupe when I was transferring the battery to the rear center compartment. The changer has probably less than ten hours of play on it so is essentially new. I will either sell it or give it as a backup to my buddy who has one in his 99 FRC.

It'll come in handy on long road trips. When I told the salesman that I'd have to switch-out the tape deck for a CD player he opined that it would be an inexpensive proposition so he most likely didn't know about the 12 disc as well. Couldn't be happier with the car!
