Default Shipping Question....

So I am curious...how do you guys and or vendors ship large items? I had a sale and I went online and the estimate from FedEx was $24 to ship a box 32"x36"x7" that weighs 7lbs from TN to OR. I brought the box to FedEx and they said there is an oversized charge that it would inherit and the new price would be $85! I had her double check and she said its the size of the box doing it. I shipped entire wheels (rims and tires) before that weighed 60lbs and it only cost me $35 per wheel from TN to CA! Is OR a state that you don't want to ship to or something? I also went to USPS and they weren't much better. Before the "oversized balloon charge" the price would be $22.50. After the "oversized balloon charge" $65! Iam curious how do all these companies shipping bumpers or radiators do it with FREE SHIPPING????

Thanks guys
Jeff

As noted, bulk shipping is it.
Even my small home business gets reduced rates based on previous months shipments. The more I ship prior, the lower my price is currently (changes every month automatically).
One company I deal with at my day job, when they were doing a few $mill/month in sales paid approx. 25% of the advertised rates (yes of, not off).
Driver comes to my house for one pair of stands, costs UPS say $20. UPS comes to my house for 4 pairs of stands, costs UPS $25

yeah that is what my bro is saying as well....the bulk rate discount. Its unreal how much these companies charge! I can see why Amazon is now starting up their own fleet of drivers and x'ing out the middleman.

You might want to check with Greyhound or Fastenal and see what they can do for you. Some here say they have much better rates than USPS, UPS or FedEx.

I'd check USPS.com for Priority mail rates for that.

All of the shippers (USPS, FedEx, UPS) get in to "dimensional weight" rates when the box is large. Mostly it's when you get over one cubic foot total. At that point, the price is more for the cubic inches than for the weight.

yeah its weird they claim as long as you don't exceed 108 total cubic inches or 112 at UPS you won't incur that "oversized" fee. But the box iam sending went over that limit with all 3 carriers.

I ended up splitting the cost with the buyer. I don't think I'll be shipping anything large anymore. Too big a hassle.

Too bad there isn't way to get a break on shipping a set of wheels...it's SO expensive!

pretty much what everyone said, the high volume shipping discount. Also freight companies that ship to a certain zone for an even better rate.

For something like a set of wheels you can get online with most any of the trucking companies and get a dimensional rate where you put the items on a pallet and take it to the terminal yourself, do not have them make a pick up, then ship it and have the other party go to the terminal and pick it up. You will save a bundle and you would be surprised at how inexpensively you can ship a pallet of goods. Go to yrc.com and check out yellow roadways pricing. You get on you can pay with a credit card, it's pretty simple. Thing is both you and the buyer have to go to a terminal to pick the item up or drop it off. If you want home delivery with liftgate, bend over.

If you have an Ebay account you can link it to a UPS account for shipping discounts, not sure about FedEx.

yep...FEDEX too.....Ebay offers discounted rates....I have sold to members here thru Ebay to save on costs for both parties...

there are many variables from weight to size and destination....once you get over a certain length you get into the dimensional shipping which can really drive up the price.....I learned a lot over the past 2 years while parting out 2 cars
