Was comparing mpg of a 1994 grand am 4 cylinder SOHC beater I just gave to my brother (he was without a car, wrecked car, bad credit, etc) just for kicks to my GF's new Kia Soul, with the small engine, the new car only gets one more mpg on highway than the old Pontiac, showing him it's not bad on gas for a old car.
While I was there I decided to compare my 6 speed 1999 Corvette against a manual 7 speed 2018 Corvette with the base LT1, and expected the new Vette to get maybe a 2-3 more mpg on highway with that 7 speed.
I guess the 6.2 extra displacement drinks more, than the little LS1?

the newer cars weigh more so that has something to do with it... personally I don't give a rats @ss about mileage, when I go for a drive I'm trying to have fun not baby it to see how far I can go before the next fill up
I drove the Corvette down to Mom's place back in July, about 300 miles, and I averaged 27mpg which I thought was impressive. The same trip in my old ZR-1 was about 26mpg which was also impressive. Yesterday we made the same trip in my wife's new Veloster Turbo and got 40mpg. Ok that was even more impressive.
This week I Evac’D for the hurricane and took my Vette out on it’s first road trip since I’ve owned it. On the 3 hour drive northbound it averaged 30.6 MPG, and on the way back it averaged 30.6 MPG. (This is using average not instant)
My daily commute is about 6mi one way - residential, left turn, 4x lights, left turn, security gate, school zone, 2 more lights, a 4 way stop, and two more left turns. Average speed is 22.4.
for that routine, my C7 (14 M7) averages 16.9 , my C5 (01 M6) averages 15-16
C7 road, depending on the trip 29-32 (non-eco mode), avg speed about 79.
Last couple road trips in the C5 were 24-27. Best I ever saw was 32.
when i put the headers & dual 3" on my otherwise stock (at the time) FRC, i was getting about 30mpg hwy; checked by gas pump ÷ odometer, not the DIC.
now with mid-500s, i still get about 18-19 in town & 27ish hwy (assuming i drive nice )
The new C7 weighs quite a bit more than the C5 - nearly 200 pounds more depending on trim and yada yada. You could say that about most all vehicles on the road though compared to when the C5 was being built sans maybe the most highest end of hyper luxury. Cars are getting heavier and heavier as more conveniences are added to them. Even most modern cheap-o econo-boxes made for the US market are fairly good in ride and sound department.
On the MPG topic my C5 averages roughly 24-25 MPG combine city/highway driving. My other car which has four less cylinders squeaks out 31-32 MPGs city/highway. Despite being six to eight MPGs down I can give you one guess as to which one I much more enjoy the ride from.
I know a lot poo-poo mileage and "it's a sports car".... whatever... The fact that it does all of the fun things AND is extremely efficient just make these cars so amazing. I can autocross it on sunday and drive it on road trips (been to KY twice and OBX once already) with tremendous range is just awesome to me. Also, the look on people's faces when you answer the "yeah but what kind of mileage does that thing get?" question is priceless. I only tell them the highway figure.... I can't keep my foot out of it in in normal driving
You normally always sacrifice fuel economy for performance, but not in this case. The C5 is remarkably fuel efficient, but considering the high price of premium fuel that is offset a little. Despite that, I still marvel at how great the mpg is even if you mix in some spirited driving. It makes it a great road trip car.
