[Z06] Z06 performance compared to New Viper
my ol '99 GTS ( 96 and up actually ) 457 HP, 490 TQ - yup, real close.
GM 'almost up there' again ...
'03 Viper SRT.. at least 505 HP, 505 TQ .. out of the box..
and GM will not go blower, as usual, will not step up to it.
bring yer '02 Z up here.. it'd be fun.
You want to add 8lb ?? sure, and match with a 200HP shot..
let's go.
my .02.. all in good clean fun
I know, the new one doesn't look like a clown shoe anymore... :blueangel:
But that was done in better conditions that this test, by someone who actually knows how to drive fast cars. :smash:
All of these early magazine tests were done with pre-production test/press cars. Which is why they still had the heat problems which will most likely be gone on production cars.
With the history of the Gen II's performance, it's not too hard to figure that production (stock) SRT-10 Vipers should be good for mid 11s at around 122-124MPH with a good track and driver, which would be hard to match with a stock Z06.
Sure adding a blower to the Corvette would be a great equalizer, but a simple N20 setup on the Vipers are seeing high 9s on stock bottom ends. Plus once you open mods up, it's pretty darned cheap to put a SVT Cobra into the mid 11s with simple bolt ons, so the door swings both ways.
There are reasons why I'd rather own a Corvette over a Mustang, and reasons why I own a Viper now, even though a New Cobra Mustang could be faster for far less $$$. Certainly an ATI Vette, or Doug Levin supercharged Viper are a match for the straight-line performance of a Ferrari Enzo, and even fairly close in handling no doubt.
But they are decidedly different cars, and most people would choose the Enzo if cost wasn't an issue.
I'm waiting for the [i[real[/i] production SRT-10s to come out (mid-late Nov.) to take the comparison numbers seriously.
-Dean.

to anyone who runs 1/4s, .5 sec is a lifetime. We had six stock GTS from '96 to '00 run high 11s ( that's 11.7 - 11.9 to you )at MIR. Show me a stock Z06 that runs sub 12s ? C'mere, 'better' driver. Anytime.
and when the SRTs get in the hands of owner / drivers with
some experience, instead of poser mag writers, that .5 sec will be
11.2 or better. Bring it on !
If you were in CA I would be glad to race you :p:

You think that is no big deal?

but i think the viper would win stock vs stock. equal drivers, equal conditions. although a good driver in a z06 will beat a bad driver in a viper obviously
and here I thought that was the GM motto..
make 30000 sleds a year, tell them fake numbers (Hill)
they'll buy/believe anything.. The bow tie boys have
had a tough time since they have gotten their ASP's
beaten ever since '92.
I actually like vettes, don't get me wrong, would own one if
I had a second sports car, always did want one.. just
chose performance first. Gone. Haven't had a Z06 yet
that will even try and show me that 11.9 you claim.
Personally I like the mountain twisties at 1g. Catch me..
if you can.. ;)
if you can..

And they get as much attention as a $250K Lambo Murcielago. :D
Just like we've seen some excellent drivers nip under 12 seconds on street tires in their Z06s, some GenII Viper owners have gotten 11.5/11.6@122MPH with bone stock cars as well.
I just mentioned the 11.77@121MPH because it was a full magazine test.
I'll happily admit that a great driver in a Z06 can be faster than an average driver in a Viper, but with equally skilled drivers in stock cars, the Viper is always faster. Sometimes as much as 0.5 seconds, which is several car lengths.
Of course adding heads and cam, or a blower will make the Corvette faster (and for less money) but bang-for-the-buck while great is not the only reason that we buy cars. It's balanced performance, style, and having a car that you really enjoy.
One point that nobody has mentioned with all of the comments about clown shoes and S2000s, is that the new Viper is a full convertible.
And at least until the $$$ Porsche Carrera GT and Mercedes SLR come out, the SRT-10 will be the quickest, fastest, convertible currently sold in the U.S. :smash:
Whether you think that that is valuable or not is your choice, and relates to your personal preferences in a performance car.
Even though the Z06 is a great car, and a great value, I personally wouldn't own one because they are available only in hardtop form.
With the same money, I'd get a regular convertible C5 and add a blower.
MRR
A stock Gen II GTS with a decent driver in decent weather will trap at least 120 MPH on street tires. You will get more MPH with a great driver & great weather.
You think that is no big deal?
However, I really thing DC blew it with the design--just heineously ugly! I cancelled my order and am not even sure it will be fixed with a coupe design.
I believe the guy who designed the Toyota Camry designed the new Viper. (And yes, I know the guy who designed the Azteck--ugliest car on the planet--is designing the C6 Vette and yes, I am concerned. However, I think Lutz will kick his @ss enough to MAKE him and others design a great C6).
Furthermore, the performance of the new Viper is basically only usable on the track and the full convertible is basically useless at the track unless it has a or a hardtop (probably a $2-3.5k factory add available soon). Try going to the local roadrace tracks on a VIPERDAY and asking the local Viper guys what they think about the new Viper-you may be surprised. Please don't take this the wrong way--I love performance cars and Vipers--just very disappointed in the new design.
Finally, I hope GM really steps up in power for the new C6 Z06!
We chatted last year by IM about hooking up; now may be a good time for you to see some Z06s run in the 11s. At least two of us will be at MIR in Budds Creek on Nov 9th. His is bone stock and mine's on DR with an intake.
Come race with us or observe. But either way bring your helmet. I'd be happy to make an 11 second pass WITH you in the passenger seat. I'll even let you keep the time slip. All in good fun. All the Z06s and Vipers are great cars and fast with a good driver. But you need that ride in a Z06 at speed to amend your perspective. And I am happy to provide the opportunity on that day.
If your sched permits, drop me an IM.
