So I have a c5 that did not come with the key fob. I purchased a new gm fob. Do I have to take it and my car to my local chev dealer to get it programmed or can I do it myself?

Here is what the owner's manual states:
Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle
Each remote kevless entry transmitter is coded to
prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can
be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring
any remaining transmitters with you when you go to
your dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement
transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters
must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the
new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock
your vehicle. Each vehicle can have a maximum of three
transmitters matched to it.
To match transmitters to your vehicle:
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver
Information Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET
button.
3. Press the Options button on the DIC several
times until the blank page is displayed, then
press and hold the RESET button for two seconds
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed,
press the RESET button once. The message
HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed in
the DIC.
5. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the
first transmitter simultaneously for five seconds.
6. When a transmitter is learned (matched), the DIC
will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to
learn the second transmitter.
7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the third transmitter.
8. Remove the key from the ignition.
The Programming mode will shut off if any of following
has occurred:
You don’t program any transmitters for two minutes.
You take the key out of the ignition
You have programmed three transmitters
I bought two transmitters off Ebay for $12.00 and a new updated receiver from a salvage yard for $35.00. I used the above procedure and it worked perfectly. Now have two new MY 2003 transmitters coded to my 1998...
So were is the receiver located at? I went through that process with know luck so it’s either the receiver or the batt. In the fob?
The receiver is located behind the side trim panel on the drivers side. The trim panel is held in place with 2 sided tape along the top where it meets the body panel. You have to take a knife or similar and slide between the body panel and the trim panel to remove it. Once that is out you will see the receiver along the top of the body. If you have a convertible all you have to do is raise the deck and it's behind the driver's seat.
My 2001 has 2 transponders. One for memory for settings #1 and one for #2. Is the above procedure going to set them both to memory position #1 or do you have to reset them one at a time?

Mine worked "for a time" and then I'd have to relearn - and then even the relearn failed. When I had it at the dealer for the AC compressor I asked them to look at it. I don't know what they did - but since then its worked flawlessly. There was a $70 charge - and also noticed that the horn chirps when locking (which it wasn't doing before) - so I guess they did a reset - need to drill into the DIC and turn that off again...
I put new battery in the original fob that had not been used in a long time.... followed directions and the programming worked great.....for a few days...then lost its coding...tried to reprogram using same correct sequence...nothing....wont reprogram...I did disconnect and reconnect main car battery for working on it during those few days.......I haven't checked the new battery in the fob yet... but cant believe its dead?..2000 c5 comments?.....what now?..
Does anyone know what the part number and FCC number is for the key fob for a 1998 Vette? I need to find one for mine and I don't want to get one online unless I can be certain it has the correct part number and FCC number.
