Is there anything that will deflect the summer sun from turning my C5 into an oven when summer arrives (yes, l can take off the targa roof, but sometimes it's not practical)
My built in spotlamps also don't work, & the cockpit button doesn't light when pressed to activate them.
Also, is there any way of accessing Chevie's database to get info & service history on my Vette other than going to the nearest official Chevy dealership?
My '02 coupe came with a "security shade" but when pulled out, it just covers below the level of the rear hatch window. That helps some but most of the time, I use the A/C when summer temps are high. The car also has window tint on the hatch glass but I bought it that way. Some states will have different percentages of tint that's allowed so if you are thinking of tint, check the DMV laws to fint out what percentage is allowed in the rear window. Then find a reputable glass shop that does tinting.
As far as checking vehicle service history, a dealer will be the only one to access service history that was done by a dealership. I'm pretty sure that GM doesn't allow outside access to their database outside of the dealers. Just take the VIN to a dealer and ask if they can run a report. There usually is no charge for that.
A Window Valet is another option which is what I use on my Z06. I roll the windows down while approaching the car and let that initial blast of heat out. It also makes entry / exit easier having the windows out of the way. The Window Valet let's you roll the windows up too.
I agree that you will need to visit a dealership to get any kind of vehicle history. This history will only include what was performed at a dealership.
Living in New Mexico with a Lexan top for my C5 coupe, I typically “crack” my windows about a 1/2” and then I have a Window Valet so when I’m approaching the vet I crank the windows down.

GM's records are not service history, only the warranty service performed if any. Unless of course the car was serviced exclusively at a single dealership the dealer could provide the maintenance history.
Here is something quick to install, I bought one this year. It works, that is all I can say. http://capoptop.com/home.htm
l think l would have difficulty driving with that in place, & maybe some of you didn't realize that l meant "How can l reduce sunshine getting into the Vette through the rear window
WHEN l AM ACTUALLY DRIVING THE CAR"
Ahh, thanks for the clarification, I didn’t want to assume you meant while driving. As others have noted and as I have done is tint the back as much as you can and use the factory package cover. There are a few add ins you can use in a coupe to block the rear with a Lexan wind blocker to make the actual cabin area smaller to air condition. Do you have the factory color matching hard top? That one of the best ways to keep the heat down. Also, if you use something like the car top before you leave it definitely helps reducing the initial heat load.
I haven’t seen louvers on a C5 and that link ^ doesn’t even offer them for your 98’. Just get your windows tinted dark and it will cut down the sunshine.

You're right, no '98 louvres...ah well, that's helped me to not have to make a decision on that issue!!!
l guess rear window tinting is the way to go from what you guys are telling me.
