Has anyone replace the C-5 radio with a system that has GPS and Backup Camera? If so what system and price. Thanks Glenn
First of al,l Welcome to the Corvette Forum and the C5 section. You question is ok to ask, however many people here have replaced their C5 factory Bose system with an after market head unit. and many with upgraded speakers... the best place to ask this question here on the Corvette forum is here:
You may get a lot of responses here, but this is a C5 general forum.. the audio electronics forum is more focused on your specific interest. There is no problem with you asking this question here..
I upgraded my radio to a Kenwood system, with Navigation and hands free phone, text, rear camera, Sirius, Pandora, HD Radio, etc. Ive upgraded the speakers as well. Most replacement units have gone to a double din bezel. the stock C5 bezel is a din and a half. There are a lot of head unit option if you go to double din. Cost will range from about 800 dollars to infinity..
I purchased a double din bezel from Vettenuts. After a lot of investigating, I've decided to go with this set up:
Pioneer's latest flagship reciever, AVIC-W8400NEX DVD GPS WiFi CarPlay + ND-BC8 Camera + SXV300V1 XM Tuner. All 3 items can be purchased as a package on eBay for $879 with free shipping. I'm thinking of adding a front camera as well.
I haven't decided whether to replace my Bose speakers yet. I like to listen to my music pretty loud and appreciate good bass, however, anytime I'm driving with my wife I feel like I'm driving with my mom as she prefers the volume at a very mild level...so I'm not sure if it's worth the investment in updating the speaker side.
Many people equate upgraded speakers to loud volume. The audio experience can be low volume but of exceptional dramatic quality.. sound is just as much about pressure as it is volume., even deaf people can feel pressure.. People often brag about 500 W or 1000 W.( that is the amp ) but in fact have poor speakers and even poorer frequency response.
Speaker response and its dynamic range are the qualities that make the hair on your arm stand up. Bass in the 20 Mhz range will give your ear drum pressures ( feelings ) that 50 Mhz speakers will never give you. because 30 Mhz has been " clipped off " same with high end tweeters.. those highs at 80,000 Mhz will send chills down your spine that 50,000 Mhz speakers will never give you. Distortion is another factor., a 500 W amp will drive any speaker.. if the speakers distort at 100 w, then you are defeating the purpose..
when you can hear a guitarist place his fingers on the frets of a guitar before strumming the cord, it is chilling and as if he is sitting in the passengers seat.
High quality audio does come at a price. I once had a 100 dollar stereo, and then I heard a 7,000 dollar stereo, there is a gigantic difference in the quality of the sound at any volume level. to many car enthusiast, they think drone and the raspy obnoxious volume of an exhaust system is cool. Those same enthusiast will put neon lights on their 1000 W amp despite its distortion. There is a reason some exhaust systems are 500 dollars and others are 1500 dollars, and in most cases its the cost of quality.. that's why I always say
" I can not afford to buy anything too cheap"
Sorry for the ramble.. just a little audio discussion from my perspective.

Just some thoughts on speakers.

You may know the C5 extremely well but you made an honest mistake here. Humans hear about 20Hz to 20 KHz, not MHz. As one gets older, we lose our hearing of the extremes, especially high frequencies.

You are correct in the sound spec ( my mistake ) I'm old but there is more to sound pressure than hearing. Your body , hair, pores skin, can feel pressure that your ears can not hear. As Ive said even a deaf person can feel sound pressure, that's why some deaf people can respond to a beat. . My point was that good speakers do not have to be loud. Loud and clean are two different things.
