I’m sure this has been discussed a zillion times, but has anyone found a good phone holder for our cars?
I have a Kenwood double din head unit with CarPlay.
I tried the Scosche magnetic mount but it has 2 problems for me. First, in cold weather with the heat on, the vent mount position has resulted in the phone issuing an overheat warning. Secondly, its seems to be losing it's magnetic strength and I end up with the phone on the floor. I'm seeking a better way to mount it and as many of you know with CarPlay, there's little interaction with the phone, so I don't need to see it as much as avoid having it floating around the interior.
I was wondering if anyone has tried a cup holder (I know, our cup holder is a joke) version that stays in place yet still holds the phone and allows the wire to be connected.
Thanks group!
ProClip has a special holder that clips to the C5 bezel on the right side of the HVAC controls. Then the will sell you a holder for your phone that mates to it. Under $100 for everything. I used it a lot before I went DD, so I haven’t put it on the new bezel yet. I am hesitant because I usually have a passenger and she can’t see the controls when the phone is in there.

I’ve been seeing commercials for the Weathertech product - looks like it would work great in the car. The one referenced by Bushman66 also looks like it would work just fine.
I really want to try the ProClip unit but if it's going to distort the bezel at all from being jammed in there then I don't want it.
I actually do use my cup holder sometimes so that is out for me.
Good thread to follow, thanks chasboy..
If you ride solo a lot or if your car is a daily, the ProClip is great. It doesn’t mess up the bezel and even though it holds on tight. if you have the stock set-up it’s a great location to use your phone for navigation & such. However, if someone is riding shotgun it pretty much makes it so they can’t see and/or adjust the radio and HVAC controls.
I checked reviews of both, the Cupfone apparently has problems according the the negative reviews, and even some that were positive. The Magaly has similar problems but additionally complaints about the adjustable base loosening in the cup holder and the flexibility of the gooseneck-either it broke or vibrates too much. I’m not thrilled with the Proclip ‘ambient tension’ method, especially since it exerts pressure on the HVAC faceplate.
Another problem for US is that our cup holder is very shallow, and the ‘sidewalls’ are not that thick. Those of us who’ve done repeated radio bezel work know that well.
I’m curious about that “peg” (?) that the cups push down onto. Is it fastened to the surface below?
I’m convinced that for me, the cup holder is the place to go. Wish I had the machine shop I taught in, I’d figure something out. However, I’m still an obsessive tinkerer, so after I finish my next group of 4 pens, I may try to cobble something together or modify something I find in the ‘gadget area’ of Marshalls/TJMaxx.
I like it’s simplicity. Just to be clear, with the DD head unit, I don’t need to look at the phone, other than to catch it if it’s flying around the cabin. For others who want to see it, this might not be the answer either.
My main concern is how secure the base holds in the cup holder.
I took a look at the vent mount you have not had much luck with and if I found the correct product, it seems to attach to the vent in such a way that the phone does get very close to the vent's vanes. I have been using a vent mount for over a year and I have had no issues with the phone getting hot or the magnet failing. The vent mount I bought has a ball and socket. This ball and socket moves the phone away from the vent; so that my be why I do not get an overheated phone. The magnet has proven to be quite strong too (in fact strong enough to hold a heavier GPS in place). In addition to the ball and socket holding the phone out away from the vent, it also affords more flexibility in positioning the phone. However, the ball and socket has on occasion become loose over time as it does take a pretty frim pull and torque to get the phone detached from the strong magnetic base. I have had to tighten the joint a couple of times-- not too difficult to do (unscrew the collar that and pop out the ball, remove a small rubber gasket and tighten with a phillips screwdriver- I used Loctite on the screw last time...that may be the ticket). The other thing about the strong magnet is that getting the mount tight enough to keep from putting it off the vent's vane takes a bit of doing because twisting the collar that tightens the mount takes considerable effort and one might easily break a vane if not careful. Rather than tightening the mount's collar against the vane, I tightened the collar down almost all the way and used a flat blade screwdriver to pry the mount's jaws apart and then slipped it onto the vane. Anyway- this one has a strong magnet, my phone does not overheat (and I winter drive my Corvette in the Midwest): and it is not very expensive:
