Had MGW in old Mustangs & my old C6Z. Have MGW in my current C5 as well. Good shifters, no doubt, but I would love something that does not require nearly as much physical force to actually shift. Maybe I just got spoiled by the shifters in my old Miatas...
Installed the shifter last night. It's quite the quality piece. The throw is somewhere between stock and the Kirban unit I took out. It is ALOT less notchy/noise which is exactly what I was wanting. I'd like the throw a TAD shorter with the race **** 5.5" from the center console. I like a taller handle to be easier to grab quickly.
Compared to other shifters, the shifting effort on MGW is EASY. I'm surprised you don't like it. Sure it's more than stock, but it is much more DD friendly than the Kirban.
I have a stock c5 shifter that I tapped the threads all the way to the flare where the damper is. Then I cut the excess height off and put the **** as far down as I could. This setup had a dramatically shorter throw while still retaining a buttery smooth operation and confident feel. Before this I had a hurst shifter and it was obnoxious notchy noisy and not smooth. With the stock shifter cut down I can shift much faster easier and confidently.
I would love to drive a car with a mgw in it to see what all the hype is about but I would bet money that I can shift faster with my cut shifter than 95% of the people out there with a aftermarket setup.
