How old are the old sensors? You do not want to mount new tires if there is a chance the process will have to be done again in a year if a sensor/sensors will fail. Sensor life is anywhere from 8 years to ten years on average. Some last a little longer, but they are designed around an 8 to ten year life span.
They have limited battery life. They began to fail on my 2002 when they were about 14 years old. Depends if yours are original or not. I replaced mine when I changed the tires.
No, you do not NEED to replace the sensors. If your car is a 2001 or later it might be nice to at least replace the batteries if you do not know when they were last replaced. As I recall, on the 2000 and earlier cars the batteries are not replaceable and the sensors are not available or are very expensive. The tire companies like to replace the sensors as they make money on them, and it is somewhat expensive to replace them if they die, as the tires need to be removed to do this. If the sensors do die you will get warnings on the dash, but they can be programmed out. Batteries are supposed to be good for 10 years or so.
Remember, I am not an expert and the foregoing is from my memory, which may or may not be perfect. I know on my 2000 when I got new tires the tire store wanted to replace them but found out they did not have any.
I bought a kit to replace mine when they'll be down or for my summer set. Be aware TPM sensors start to work when the wheels are spinning. So if the car was a garage queen for a long time, you may have still some decent battery life.
i found a decent price here : https://www.tpms.com/2000_Chevrolet_...PMS_s/5412.htm
not sure if it is ok to post here, admin can delete if not.

I had a bad experience with aftermarket sensors. If you ever need them I would stick with OEM. I bought an aftermarket sensor but the car never would recognize it.
Tire Rack supplies OEM sensors (made by Schrader). I bought a wheel/tire/TPMS package from them when my C5 was 14 years old, and still running the original sensors. After about 10 years you are basically "on your own".
I got my tires at Firestone last saturday. They rebuilt my original sensors ( whatever that means ) know some guys that had theirs rebuilt a few years ago too. No problems so far. I guess time will tell. Very happy with my new FireHawks Indy 500. Great price paided $708. out the door. Mounted, balanced TPMS rebuilt and front end aligned.

I like mine as well....btw it should have been a four wheel alignment.
