My new 03 is really throwing out brake dust on the wheels. Maybe its due to the brakes breaking in I hope. The car now has 250 miles. I can wash it and then drive it around the block and the wheels are covered. Is this normal on the Z06's ??? My 00 hard top was never close to this bad.......
Its really not THAT big of a deal, but I am curious as to why.
My 00 FRC had the same brakes as this car. I did here that the brake pads are different on the Z06's. Surely there are replacements that do not dust like these things.........
Be careful with aftermarket carbon metallic pads, the really good ones (good braking) can pit the paint on the wheels because of the size of the pieces that come off during braking... at least that is what I've experienced in the past. Obviously I mean this as a really long term side effect.
If you didn't have a problem with the brakes on your FRCs or previous C5s, go to your dealership and see if they still service those pads. You have literally no miles on your current cars, just swap the pads. You can send me your take offs if you like... :D
I have 9K on mine... My car looks clean.. my rims, look like poopie.
Many people are switching to the Carbon pads. They claim only very minor difference in stopping power and no dust!
I assume you mean "changing to CERAMIC pads"? If so, the braking is different depending on how you drive. IE: Sunday driving= NOT a major difference, Competitive driving=MAJOR difference in performance and DUST.
You want great performance, you are going to get great dust. You want pretty good brake performance and significantly less dust, go with the ceramics.
That is normal for the Z06 due to the different brake pad compound. Keep in mind the LeMans C5R has a ton of brake dust on it's wheels on any picture I've ever seen! Just the mark of a true performance car! :yesnod: :)
Yea, with all of the competitive driving I do from day to day on the city streets. I guess I do need the better brake pads that will alow me 5 foot more stopping power needed . The drums would not work for me !
I may need 18 in rotors in the front in order to compete here on the streets of Dallas TX.
I added ceramic brake pads on my Corvette and the reduction in dust was dramatic. Overall, the braking was similar with cold weather braking a little worse with the ceramics, but generally fine for normal (occasionally spirited) driving. But the advantage that I found with the ceramics was that they felt much better when warmed up, and they didn't fade like the stock pads did under heavy use.
On my current car I've been using EBC greens in front and EBC reds inback. They don't squeal like the stock pads and only have a fraction of the dust, but offer comparable braking.
I've been really pleased with the EBCs, but I'm not sure if they offer them for the C5/Z06 Corvettes.
