Ive never been a “Corvette guy”...not a big fan of the C3; C4 was a major improvement, but still cramped. But I bought a 2001 C5 base on a whim this past December and have been enjoying more than I could have imagined. I immediately fixed the headlight gears; added some sound deadening to the rear; did the high/low beam jumper trick and buffed and waxed it...thats it. Its only got 40k miles on it.
This week my wife and I took it on a 3-day vacation trip in central Texas to celebrate her 54th birthday (I’m almost 60). First day was Fredericksburg, TX where we enjoyed fields of bluebonnets. Next day Glen Rose, TX bed and breakfast. It was a joy on those hilly twisty roads! My wife drove too so she could enjoy the cars power and handling. We hit 120 mph a couple times just because we could! Last day we drove through Bastrop snd Buescher parks with the top off. We love this car! Plenty of room for occupants up front and plenty of room for luggage in the back. And the ride was taught, but very comfortable.
i guess im preaching to the crowd on this forum...you already know this! But this old Ford truck guy is now a Corvette fan too!
Oh yeah! We're in Myrtle Beach, SC., and drive up to Maryland 3-4 times a year to see the kids. and grandkids. Just got back from going down to Venice, Fl. for a Corvette car show, where I was shocked that I won the "Participants Choice Award" for C5's. We've also driven over to the Blue Ridge Mtns. to do some whitewater rafting, and zip lining. Planning on taking a month or so and go out to San Diego to revisit my old stomping grounds, then up the coastal highway to Frisco, then on through Oregon and Washington before working our way back home. The C5 is a joy to drive on either interstates or back roads. As long as I can continue to get in and out of it , I plan on driving the wheels off of it!!
Asylum is right! Now every night i look at other Corvettes and think “ shoulda bought a 2003 anniversary C5. Or maybe a Z06 with a proper transmission (6-speed). But those 2013 Grand Sports sure look good too!” Then i just say, enjoy what you got and be content.
I have taken several trips in my coupe and these are great cars to travel with. There is enough room in the back of a coupe to bring a lot of stuff. My wife is handicapped so we have a travel wheelchair and a walker that we also bring along. With the manual it just loafs along at highway speeds getting 30 mpg. It isn't as quiet or as smooth as my daily driver but it is a lot more fun.
I belong to a great club Heart of Texas corvette club. We do group cruises. Might be something your interested in. Most of us are in Austin but we have some in temple and above too.
