Default Header Install

Hey Guys and Gals- I’m getting ready to start a long tube header install and LS6 intake swap. Is it easier to install the headers with the intake removed, or does it matter? I’m looking at using either ARP stainless or Stage8 locking header bolts (at twice the cost). Either one needs to be 3/4 inches long, correct?

Intake won't make any difference while doing headers, especially since most headers go in from the bottom. I prefer to use stock bolts on headers.

As stated above, the intake manifold is not an obstruction for the headers. I actually just installed a seton my buddy's car last weekend.

Depending on what set you got, they may install from the bottom or form the top. Mine are Kooks, and they go in from the top.

On the driver's side, you will need to remove the alternator, disconnect the steering shaft, and possibly remove the coil packs/bracket from the valve cover. You will also need to unbolt both engine mounts from the bottom of the from cradle. Jack up each side of the engine to allow more room to slide the headers in.

Passenger side you will do the same. Get as much of a vertical angle sliding them in as you can. The starter will be your biggest obstruction, but you can get it past.

I also use the stock bolts. They always seem to fit better than any aftermarket bolts.

Above is not exactly true. The new model kooks go in from the bottom easily without much work. It was a recent design change because customers were complaining. I would give the manufacturer a call and/or make sure you have the most up to date directions.

I used an ARP stud kit and those are beautiful. Albeit a bit pricey.

I would not install them if I had to go through all that mentioned above. I think ARH has a better way.

Install Kooks and you will have no issues. They go right in from the bottom.

LG longtubes install on jack stands. Driver side went in from bottom and passenger in from top after removing valve cover. Many have said both sides can slide in from bottom, but this was not the case for mine on the pass... should’ve just removed valve cover right away and slid in from top. Good luck!
