Default Heat control ****...

I did a search, no luck, since the weather is cooling down now, and I am still a newbie, I tried to get my heat going today ( 2002 C-5),
my driver's heat selector **** just free wheels around and around, no resistance at all when turned, the passenger side doe's have resistance,
the second thing is the a/c/ light also comes on when I have the heat button pushed, am I doing something wrong?, the car doe's supply heat
some where, but I don't know where it;s coming from.

Your ***** are working as they are supposed to. The A/C compressor will come on if you are in defrost mode

I read the manual and also went on you tube, nothing explains why the drivers control **** just free wheels, doesn't feel like it's
connected to anything, loosey goosey.

Can you see the temp?
Turning the driver's side **** runs the temp up or down.
Once at the upper (90) or lower (60) it just freewheels.
Slowly turn the **** until it says 73 and leave it alone.
Give it some time to decide how to setup the heater/AC to get the car to 73 degrees.

The **** doesn't do it - a computer and sensors do it via vacuum, solenoids and air mix doors.
Get to like 73 degrees.
