Default MAF housing

I have a 2000 C5 base. On the air filter side of the metal MAF housing mine has a screen. I see on newer C5’s these do not have the screen. Can this be removed? I know the 3 sensors inside the housing cannot be touched, but think the screen hampers air flow, just curious as to the screen’s function and if needed? Thanks in advance.

the screen is there to help straighten the airflow past the sensor, the c5 z06 maf did not have a screen but I believe the tune is compensated for this so if you remove your screen you might need to do the same... for a stock or lightly modded car it probably isn't worth it in my opinion

Have you done anything else. And why just the MAF. I have a 98 with the same stock setup. The air box is terrible. I changed the air box, larger tunnel ram, LS6 Maf, LS6 intake manifold. B&B PRTs cat back. Tune. Woke her right up. I can’t remember for sure, it’s been awhile, but I think the MAF had the screen. I don’t think just what you are asking is going to change much.

The Z06 had the MAF screen removed from 2002 to 2004, I believe. In the PCM there are two types of coding, 96K which can be altered to a degree and the remaining 400+K is hard coded-non changeable- firmware (aka Adaptive Strategy). The coding for the amount of air turbulence going to the TB is part of the hard coding. Removing the screen requires several other changes to the programming and does not gain any more HP/TQ. The stock TB on the 345/350 hp flows about 750 CFM and the engine at 6200 uses slightly more than 600 CFM.
